Johan M. Doeden Jr - Repeat Sex Offender gets 116 years

“I don’t think there’s any curing what this man has,” Koester said. “To do this to a 10-year-old girl after getting caught once with a 10-year-old girl, going to prison and having whatever happened to him in prison and to (then) come out and reoffend is absolutely atrocious.

“There’s not enough time that we can give today that would be an adequate sentence for Mr. Doeden.”

“This happened to my daughter for two years,” the girl’s mother testified during the sentencing hearing. “I think you’re remorseful that you got caught. You did this to an innocent little girl — a little girl who no longer believes in Santa Claus and miracles.”

A Muncie man was sentenced to more than 110 years in prison for molesting a 10-year-old Madison County girl.

Madison Superior Court 3 Judge Thomas Newman sentenced Johan M. Doeden Jr. to 116 years behind bars Monday on two counts of Class A felony child molestation, a Class C felony count of child molestation, and a single charge of child exploitation, also a Class C felony.

Newman gave Doeden, 32, the maximum on each count. A Class A felony carries a sentence of 20 to 50 years in prison, while a Class C felony is punishable by two to eight years.

“The main thing is, I just want to extend to the victim and her family how sorry I am I did this,” Doeden said before the sentence was handed down. “I truly wish I had never done this. I do want to make it up somehow. I have no idea, but I’m willing to follow any recommendations the court may have and work as hard as I can to basically try to make (it) up to the victim and the family.”

Deputy Prosecutor Steve Koester argued for Doeden to get the maximum because he was convicted about a decade ago of molesting another 10-year-old girl in Benton County. Doeden received a 10-year sentence in that case and was ordered to spend eight years in prison. During his prison stay, he was repeatedly sexually assaulted by other inmates, he testified.

Doeden.”

The molestations began in December 2006 and continued through July 2007, according to the charging information. He was arrested in August and pleaded guilty in December without a deal with prosecutors.

“This happened to my daughter for two years,” the girl’s mother testified during the sentencing hearing. “I think you’re remorseful that you got caught. You did this to an innocent little girl — a little girl who no longer believes in Santa Claus and miracles.”

The Herald Bulletin, which doesn’t generally name sex crime victims, is withholding the mother’s name because it could identify the girl. The 10-year-old did not testify during the hearing.

Doeden also faces similar charges involving the same girl in Delaware County. His attorney, Dan Whitehead of Anderson, argued for Doeden to receive a 50-year prison term, with the remaining sentences to be served at the same time.

Whitehead said he expects the Delaware County case to be resolved soon, with any prison time to be served after the Madison County sentence has been completed.

“He’s still a person,” Whitehead said. “Hopefully, still with a life that has something better to offer than this. Otherwise, in essence, he’ll be receiving a life sentence.”
