Brent Milton Kamaru - Repeat Sex Offender - Repeat Child Molester

“I was somewhat surprised at the lack of insight into the offending, the lack of remorse, and the inability to understand a way forward, by the offender.”

Repeat sex offender Brent Milton Kamaru, from Greymouth, has been jailed for eight years for the protection of the community, and a non-parole period has been imposed.

His sentence followed guilty pleas in the Christchurch District Court, admitting four representative charges of indecent assault and sexual violation that covered abuse against two girls aged seven and nine.

The court had been told by the police that indecencies became “commonplace” at times when 42-year-old Kamaru was with the girls.

Judge Fred McElrea imposed sentences totalling eight years, telling Kamaru: “Both girls suffered serious, on-going psychological damage and the effects on their lives will be with them, possibly forever.”

At the request of the crown prosecutor, Marty Robinson, he imposed a non-parole term of five years as part of the sentence to strongly denounce the offending and to protect society from Kamaru.

After reading the pre-sentence report, Mr Robinson said: “I was somewhat surprised at the lack of insight into the offending, the lack of remorse, and the inability to understand a way forward, by the offender.”

Defence counsel Paul Johnson said Kamaru had a troubled upbringing and there had been instances of abuse against him, but there was no evidence apart from his own account. He presented an obvious problem in terms of his sexuality and attraction to children.

He would make best use of his term in prison to address his drug and alcohol issues, said Mr Johnson. Kamaru had been co-operative with the police and had pleaded guilty almost immediately.

Judge McElrea described the indecencies of touching, or digital penetration that Kamaru had admitted. One of the girls had also described him showing her pornographic images on his computer.
He noted that Kamaru had a previous conviction for indecent assault on a girl aged under 16 in 2007, and unlawful sexual connection with a girl in 1992 when he received a four-and-a-half year jail term.

He received periodic detention on a charge of loitering or peering near a house in 1991.

He had a large number of other convictions of various types, including some for being unlawfully in an enclosed yard or building.

Judge McElrea said the latest offending was made worse by the number and frequency of the incidents, and the vulnerability of the girls because of their ages.
There had been no violence or force used, but the girls did not know how to deal with this type of conduct.

“His remorse may be seen as sorrow for himself rather than an appreciation of the real damage caused by his conduct,” said the judge.
