A Dumfries police officer was part of an investigation that brought 25 charges of distributing child pornography against a 64-year-old Missouri man.
On Sept. 28, authorities in Missouri got a search warrant for the Everton, Mo., home of Robert V. Hoffman Jr., according to a Dumfries police press release.
During the search of Hoffman’s home, police found thousands of images of children being sexually abused, according to the release. The task force, Dumfries police and Stafford Sheriff’s Office are now working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to identify the children in the photos.In June, Hoffman contacted Dumfries Officer John Chapman, who was posing online as a 13-year-old boy, according to the release.
During three months of online conversations, police said, Hoffman distributed numerous photos of underage boys and girls engaged in various sex acts. On some occasions, Hoffman would also perform sex acts on himself while in front of a Web video camera, according to the release.
During the three-month investigation, Chapman allowed Hoffman to communicate with a Stafford County Sheriff’s Office detective who also posed as an underage boy. Hoffman also transmitted several similar photos and also engaged in sex acts in front of a Web camera, stated the department.
Dumfries police contacted the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force late last month and identified Hoffman as a suspect.
Hoffman was convicted in 1977 on four counts of raping a child, said Chapman. He was not on any sort of probation or parole when he was arrested last month, he added.Hoffman is currently sitting in a Missouri detention center awaiting extradition to Virginia.
Missouri officials are also considering filing additional charges against Hoffman.
