Man sentenced to weekend detention over child porn

A Canberra man has been sentenced in the ACT Magistrates Court for possessing child pornography.

Stephen John Carter, 44, pleaded guilty to intentionally possessing child pornography after police found 21 images and eight video clips on his home computer of young girls engaged in sexual acts.

The only other person to use the computer was Carter's nine-year-old daughter.

In sentencing, Magistrate Karen Fryer described the offence as serious saying if people did not possess child pornography there would be less incentive to abuse children.

Carter will start five months of weekend detention tonight and will then be placed on a five month suspended sentence.
