A Clark County, Indiana man is in jail facing child sex abuse charges. The suspect works at a local school, but that is not the most disturbing part of the story....the alleged victims tried to get help seven years ago to no avail.
According to court documents, the three alleged victims are family members of 60-year-old Charles Sparks and police say the abuse has been going on for years. Sparks was arrested at his Jeffersonville home Thursday and charged with 58 counts of child sex abuse.
Detectives say they have been investigating Sparks, who works as a custodian at Parkview Middle School, for several months. The investigation started after one of his alleged victims finally stepped forward.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Sparks had forced the girls to perform sexual acts for the past 12 years and as recently as five months ago.
"On December 14th was the last time he had sexual intercourse with one of the victims," said Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Shelley Marble.
Court records show the girls, who are allegedly related to Sparks, now ages 22, 20, and 17, tried to come forward in 2001. The case was dismissed in Clark Superior Court.
"The system failed these girls and that is what is so sad," said Marble. "I'm trying my best to make sure that I am fair and equitable to him, but I believe that justice needs to be served in this case."
The probable cause affidavit also stated that two of Sparks' alleged victims recorded him apologizing for the abuse and the pain he caused them. The tape was given to investigators.
Sparks is being held in the Clark County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.
