URBANA – A Prophetstown man with a sex conviction as a juvenile was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday for sexually molesting a child.
Kyle Clementz, 20, pleaded guilty in November to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child for committing a sex act with a 10-year-old Paxton girl on Sept. 1.
The incident occurred in the Middle Fork Preserve in Penfield, where Clementz was on a camping trip with the girl's family, according to Assistant State's Attorney Duke Harris.
Harris asked Judge Tom Difanis to sentence Clementz to 22 years, noting his other convictions for burglary as an adult and first-degree sexual assault, theft, and making a false report of a bomb threat as a juvenile. The sexual assault conviction happened in Wisconsin. Clementz's attorney, Assistant Public Defender Carrie Peltier, recommended the minimum sentence of six years.
In return for Clementz's guilty plea, Harris agreed to cap his prison recommendation at 22 years, even though 30 is the maximum for a Class X felony. Harris also agreed to dismiss a second count of predatory criminal sexual assault alleging a different sex act with the girl.
