The Human Face of Pedophilia - Garry Francis Newman

The Adelaide Supreme Court this morning stripped Newman, 50, of Victoria, of his anonymity and ordered his name and face be made public.

Justice Trish Kelly then jailed Newman - who she called a "overweight, balding, middle-aged paedophile" - for life, with a 29-year non-parole period.

Until now, Newman's real name has been obscured by both legal complexities surrounding the long-running case, and by the sexual predator's own scheming.
For years, Newman maintained in excess of 200 fake online identities - under a variety of perverted, risque names - while communicating with teenage girls, seeking to have sex with them.
In sentencing today, Justice Kelly said such behaviour proved Newman "completely lacked a moral compass" and had "no insight" into his crime.

She said he "masqueraded' as Miss Ryan's dream man, Brandon Kane, in a "grossly perverted plan" to secure the trust of the girl and her mother, Sonya.

"It was a terribly cruel thing you did to this beautiful, impressionable 14-year-old child," she said.

"I say 'child' because that's what she was - a child who fell in love with the idea of the handsome, musically-inclined and rather exotic Brandon Kane.

"The real man, instead, was an overweight, balding, middle-aged paedophile with sex and murder on his mind.

"When your deception came unravelled and unstuck you killed her, leaving in your wake a devastated and inconsolably grief-striken mother, family and friends."

Newman's twisted pursuit of Miss Ryan, in 2006 and 2007, was the third time he had attempted such a scheme.

He had previously chased girls in the United States and Singapore, vowing to leave one "looking like the packaged meat you get at Safeway" when she stood him up.

In January 2007, Newman travelled to Adelaide under the pretence of being "Brandon's father, Shane" to meet Miss Ryan - but she rebuffed his advances at her 15th birthday party.

Newman returned to Adelaide the next month, using the Brandon Kane Internet construct to lure Miss Ryan to a final meeting at Port Elliot.

Her body was found in the shallows of Horseshoe Bay the next morning.

Today, Justice Kelly said she had no doubt Newman intended to kill Miss Ryan.

"It might be that in the days you spent with her... you vacillated, you might have thought you could persuade her to return ... with you," she said.

"You might have even hoped you could have her way with her, right up until the very moment you decided to kill her.

"You set up an environment where you could have access to Miss Ryan in a lonely and deserted place."

Throughout his trial, Newman denied playing any part in Miss Ryan's death, claiming he left the teen alive and well on the beach.

He insisted he felt "fatherly" toward her, and had no sexual interest in the girl.

Justice Kelly dismissed those claims.

"You were, in fact, sexually obsessed with Miss Ryan to the degree that, when you could not get your own way you prepared to, and did, kill her," she said.

"It is the only explanation for what happened."

She said she had made a "small" discount in Newman's sentence for the "belated confession" he made in court last week.

In a statement, Carly's mother, Sonya Ryan, thanked her supporters, the police officers who had worked on the case and prosecutors Tim Preston and Carmen Matteo.

She was happy the matter had come to an end.

"I am relieved that Garry Newman is no longer a danger to the community and other innocent children," she said.

"I am pleased the truth has been revealed for Carly and the community can now see the enormous level of manipulation and cruelty carried out by this man.

"Nothing can give Carly back her life but I will endeavour to honour her by moving forward with The Carly Ryan Foundation, helping to prevent such an awful crime from happening to another child."

Brian Douglas Horn - Repeat Sex Offender - Taxi Driver - Baby Killer

Investigators from DeSoto Parish have arrested 34-year-old Brian Douglas Horn, a registered sex offender, for the alleged murder of a 12-year-old Stonewall, LA boy.

Investigators say Justin M. Bloxom was last seen at a home on Douglas Lane in Stonewall, Louisiana.

Police say that Horn, a taxi driver who worked out of Bossier City, allegedly murdered the boy.

Efforts to track Horn down led to Action Taxi on Barksdale Boulevard in Bossier City, where employees were told by police to be on the lookout for him and to call immediately if he showed up, which he did a short time later.

However Horn didn't stay long, leaving his taxi behind. It's the one authorities believe was seen near where the little boy's body was found.

Horn's boss said he worked for Action Taxi for just 10 days. He said Horn kept to himself and didn't make friends. Horn's boss knew he was a registered sex offender, but felt he couldn't discriminate against him when it came to giving him job.

Authorities say Horn was properly registered as a sex offender in DeSoto Parish.

He is now charged with 2nd degree murder.

Mario D. Frederick - Repeat Sex Offender - Repeatedly

Sheriff's Office officials on Monday caught a registered sex offender who had been running from law enforcement.

Mario D. Frederick had been charged by Sheriff's Investigator Jeffrey Morlock with a Violation of the Sexual Offender Registry for having contact with a former victim, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, as well as the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force in Nashville had been trying to locate Frederick since the warrant was issued March 11.

On Monday, Deputy Mike Cereceres tried to stop Frederick on state Highway 48/13, the release said.

Cereceres was responding to an indecent exposure call where the victim reported she was being followed. Cereceres located Fredrick and his vehicle, both matching the victim's description.

Frederick sped away, and Cereceres lost sight of his vehicle on Seven Mile Ferry Road. When he found Frederick’s vehicle, it had run off the road into a creek bed.

Montgomery County EMS and Volunteer Fire Services responded.

Frederick refused treatment and also refused transport by EMS to the hospital.

Deputies at the scene decided took Frederick to the emergency room at Gateway Medical Center for evaluation prior to booking. Frederick is currently being held at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for medical observation and will be taken into custody when he is released.
Frederick was previously convicted on three charges of indecent exposure. He also has five cases of indecent exposure pending in federal court stemming from incidents on Fort Campbell.
In addition to the warrant for the Sexual Offender Registration violation, Frederick is charged with felony evading arrest, reckless driving, and other traffic offenses.

Eugene A. Levesque - Repeat Sex Offender

A Jacksonville man listed as a registered sex offender was being held Monday in Alachua County after he was accused of sending pictures of naked men to a teenage boy.

Eugene A. Levesque, 56, is facing three counts of improper use of an electronic device for reportedly using a cell phone to send pictures of naked men involved in lewd and lascivious acts to a 13-year-old boy, according to the State Attorney's Office.

Levesque had been staying with a family in Waldo in late December and early January when the incidents occurred, Waldo police reported.

Levesque also had been accused of sexually molesting a mentally disabled adult during the same time frame. But prosecutors found there was insufficient evidence to pursue the allegation in court, said Spencer Mann with the State Attorney's Office.

Officers booked Levesque into the Alachua County jail on Saturday, according to jail records. A $225,000 bond was set for his release.

As a registered sex offender, Levesque is listed on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Web site that names registered sex offenders and predators in the state.

Levesque, according to the site, was convicted in 1997 on a charge out of Clay County involving lewd and lascivious behavior and a child under 16. In 2005 in Duval County, he was also convicted of failing to comply with his sex offender registration.

Bobby Winn - Repeat Sex Offender

A convicted sex offender is accused of striking again.

Grimes County Sheriff investigators arrested Bedias resident Bobby Winn, 39, on Monday for Sexual Assault of a Child and Failing to Register as a Sex Offender.

The arrest came after a 14-year-old girl reported being attacked by Winn in a Bedias home the previous week.

Upon further investigation, authorities learned Winn had been living in Bedias for about four weeks after moving from Madisonville. While he had registered as a Sex Offender in Madisonville, investigators say Winn failed to register in Grimes County within seven days of his move, as required by law.

Winn is being held on bonds totaling $150,000.

Boy Scouts followed in the footsteps of the Catholic Church

Just like the Catholic Church and the Sex Offender Solutions and Education Network: Don't tell and protect the pedophile at all costs.

A specialist on sex abuse told a Portland jury Wednesday that the Boy Scouts of America knew more than any other organization about offenders within their own ranks but failed to inform parents -- or go to law enforcement -- to prevent more boys from being abused.

"They realized they had a problem, and they created a system to deal with it," said Gary Schoener, a certified psychologist in Minnesota who has advised churches and other nonprofits nationwide about the abuse of authority. "You don't create a system if you don't have a problem."

That system involved detailed "perversion" files on Scouting leaders who were kicked out of the Boy Scouts for committing abuse. The aim was to keep offenders out of Scouting, but the files were kept confidential and in some cases were destroyed.

The files form the foundation of a civil liability lawsuit brought by a 37-year-old man against the Texas-based Boy Scouts of America and its local organization, Cascade Pacific Council in Oregon. The man, known as Jack Doe in court documents, is seeking $14 million in damages over abuse by former Portland Scout leader Timur Dykes, who is a convicted sex offender.

Doe testified about his relationship with Dykes on Wednesday. He said he took part in more than 20 sleepovers at Dykes' apartment, where boys would work on their merit badges and then play Dungeons & Dragons -- a game Doe's parents had forbidden. The Scout leader, who sometimes had Doe over alone, let the boys stay up late, and make as much noise as they wanted. In the morning, he fed them french fries for breakfast.

Doe said the boys slept in different places, such as a couch or even the floor, but he always slept in Dykes' bed.

"It was like my spot," he said. "It was where I went to bed every time."

On four occasions, he woke up and found himself on top of Dykes, who was aroused.

He said he knew it wasn't right, kept his eyes closed pretending to be asleep and rolled off him.

The two never discussed it.

On a fifth occasion, Dykes abused Doe while looking after the boy and his siblings in their own home. They were sitting on a couch -- alone -- and Dykes took the boy's hand and forced it up his leg under his shorts to his genitals.

The boy drew his hand away.

That was not long before July 1984, when police pulled Dykes over in a van while taking Doe and other boys on a trip to Tillamook. The officer, realizing that Dykes was a sex offender and was not supposed to be around minors, arrested him and took the boys to the police station. After his parents arrived and they asked him if he had been abused, he said no.

"I didn't want to be a disappointment to my parents," he said. "I was embarrassed."

Schoener said Dykes' ability to curry favor with the boy was typical of many offenders outlined in the Boy Scout files, which he characterized as "extraordinary."

"To my knowledge no one had this kind of databank," he said.

He said the hundreds of confidential files that he had read -- more than 1,100 are included in the case -- taught the Boy Scouts common patterns of who was committing the abuse, how it occurred and how the abusers often tried to sneak back into the organization after being kicked out.

Yet, the Boy Scouts did not tell parents about offenders so they could protect their kids, Schoener said. "All of the parents have a right to know," he said.

Schoener was also critical of the organization for not educating sponsors, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Portland, about potential sex abuse and for not seeking out law enforcement.

"You fell short," he said of the Boy Scouts. "You did the right thing by keeping the files. You just didn't use them effectively."

Paul Xochihua, a lawyer representing the Cascade Pacific Council, said that the files showed an average of about 50 abuse cases a year between 1966 and 1985. He said there were perhaps 1 million Scouting leaders at that time, indicating that the actual rate of abuse was small.

Xochihua also stressed that the abuse in this case did not take place during regular Scouting activities but happened mostly on weekends and in Dykes' apartment.

The trial resumes on Monday and is expected to last two more weeks.

Ronald Stacey Rhodes - Repeat Sex Offender - Internet Predator

Rhodes had been placed in the state sex offender registry after he was convicted in September 2004 in Wake County of first-degree rape of a child. The victim was 12. Rhodes was 16 at the time.

Sheriff's deputies have accused a registered sex offender of using a social-networking Internet site to meet an 18-year-old woman and then kidnapping, raping and extorting cash from her, according to court records made public Tuesday.

Ronald Stacey Rhodes, 22, of 1300 Farm Road, Lot 3 in Raleigh, was arrested Sunday by the Wake County Sheriff's Office and was being held at the Wake County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, authorities reported.

The woman told investigators that she met Rhodes during the week of the Super Bowl on Facebook.com, according to a search warrant application.

She said she spent time with Rhodes every day for a week, including a day-trip to Virginia, according to the court affidavit.

On Feb. 13, the woman told sheriff's deputies that she went to Rhodes' home for dinner. After dinner, Rhodes asked her to his bedroom to show her his N.C. State University memorabilia. Rhodes began to grope her and forcefully kissed her, the woman said.

When she told him to stop, he threatened to have her "erased," according to the affidavit, which she understood to mean disappear or perhaps be killed. She said he photographed her naked and raped her, before allowing her to leave, according to the affidavit.

The woman said Rhodes has since used the photographs to blackmail her into having sex with him and give him $160. She finally went to police.

Rhodes had been placed in the state sex offender registry after he was convicted in September 2004 in Wake County of first-degree rape of a child. The victim was 12. Rhodes was 16 at the time. He is not considered a predator, state records show.

Biby was previously convicted on charges of child molestation and production of child porn.

A registered sex offender was arrested in Fullerton and police suspect he may have been producing child pornography.

46-year-old Vaughn Biby was arrested Thursday at his home in the 2000 block of West Houston Avenue during a compliance check.
Officers said they found a staggering amount of child pornography in his home, including tens of thousands of photographs, DVDs, books, cameras and camcorders with homemade videos.
Police also found binoculars in Biby's vehicle and tokens for games at Chuck E. Cheese.

Investigators are now concerned there may be unidentified young victims.

Biby was previously convicted on charges of child molestation and production of child porn. Biby was locked up in lieu of $250,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned Monday.

"The children in the photos and videos appear to primarily range in age from infant to prepubescent," Goodrich said.

Police also found several binoculars near the windows of Biby's home and in his car, Goodrich said, adding that one pair had a built-in still camera and video camera. Biby also had several library cards and hundreds of Chuck E. Cheese tokens, he said.

Biby had books on police investigations of child predators "presumably to be able to stay ahead of any law enforcement investigations," Goodrich said.

Alexander Wright - Repeat Sex Offender - Started as a Juvenile

Simmons says Wright had excellent work references. A felony background check was performed. However, she did not see the prior sex assault charges since he was convicted as a minor.

A man convicted of sexually assaulting two children has been accused of doing it again.

According to DPS records, Alexander Wright served time in the Texas Youth Commission starting in 2001 at age 13 for the aggravated sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl. In 2003, at age 15, Wright was arrested for the sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl. While still on parole for those convictions at age 22, he was taken to jail again.

"A victim came in and made an outcry of a sexual assault,” said Detective Kenneth Sidenblad, Bee Cave Police Department.

Detective Kenneth Sidenblad says the alleged victim is a girl under 17 who was an acquaintance of Wright. Within hours of her outcry Tuesday, police arrested Wright and filed charges of indecency with a child and sexual assault. The investigation isn't over.

"Based on some information we have we're checking other people he may have been in contact with to see if they potentially may have been victims,” said Sidenblad.

Wright has worked at the Amy's Ice Cream in the Hill Country Galleria since October of 2009. Though Sidenblad says the incidents did not occur at the business, nor did he meet the victim there, it still has people concerned. We spoke to several nannies who typically take their kids to play right out front.

"It's just pretty shocking. It's a nice area. You wouldn't think something like that would happen here,” said Michelle Simmons.

The owner of Amy's Ice Cream, Amy Simmons, had no idea she hired a repeat sex offender. "It's devastating. There's nothing more important for us than our community. It's what's made us successful."

Simmons says Wright had excellent work references. A felony background check was performed. However, she did not see the prior sex assault charges since he was convicted as a minor.

If she checked the DPS sex offender website, the record would have appeared.

"I think it's a huge lesson and a big wake up call for businesses,” said Simmons.

Wright is no longer employed with the company. He has a $1.4 million bond. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has placed a hold on him preventing him from bonding out since he was in violation of his parole.

Michael Angelo Borromeo - Former Girl Scout Leader - Guilty of Child Porn

A former volunteer for the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valley has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to producing a video containing child pornography.

Thirty-nine-year-old Michael Angelo Borromeo of Faribault pleaded guilty Friday to producing the cell phone video that featured a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct in June 2008.

Borromeo faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and could face a maximum of 30 years when he's sentenced at a later date.

Borromeo had been charged in Rice County with felony criminal sexual conduct, child solicitation and creating child pornography. The alleged victim was a family friend, according to the Faribault Daily News.

Police say Borromeo acknowledged having sex with the girl multiple times, but denied using force.

Paul Iles - Repeat Sex Offender - Claimed he was reformed

Iles made headlines five years ago when he moved into an Erlanger subdivision full of children, angering parents in the neighborhood.

In an interview at his home there in April 2005, Iles told The Enquirer he had successfully completed a sex-offender treatment program in prison and was no longer a threat to children, and that he was compliant with the state as a registered sex offender. He claimed he learned to take responsibility for his crime, empathize with his victims and avoid high-risk situations.

But the abuse against another victim that began in 2003 occurred after his release and before the interview, unknown to anyone at the time except the victim and him. He continued abusing her for four years.

Paul Iles, a registered sex offender who has spent two terms in prison totaling 16 years for sex abuse against children, has been arrested again.

Iles, 54, was arrested last week after being indicted by a Kenton County grand jury in 2008 on a first-degree sodomy charge against a child under 12 years of age.

The alleged crime occurred between 1974 and 1983 in Erlanger.

Iles was arraigned Monday in Kenton County District Court. He is being held in the Kenton County jail on $10,000 cash bond.

Iles wasn't arrested until last Wednesday because he'd been serving a three-year sentence at Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange. That was for a 2007 conviction in Boone County for first-degree sexual abuse. The victim was 10 years old when the abuse initially began in 2003.

That prison term ended Wednesday, but Iles was picked up there by the Kenton County Sheriff's Department on the warrant from the Erlanger Police Department.

Iles' first prison term lasted 13 years, from 1990 through 2002, for the molestation of a young boy and girl in Kenton County in the 1980s. The children were those of a woman he was dating at the time.

But the abuse against another victim that began in 2003 occurred after his release and before the interview, unknown to anyone at the time except the victim and him. He continued abusing her for four years.

The child's mother said Iles should never be released.

"I really hope they convict him and lock him up and throw away the key," the mother said Monday.

Thomas Louis Van Hook - Repeat Sex Offender - Tried to be a Babysitter

A judge has sentenced a man to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole for violating rules all convicted sex offenders must follow in Texas.

A Jasper County jury took only 30 minutes Wednesday afternoon to decide the punishment for Thomas Louis Van Hook, 56. The jury convicted him of not complying with sex offender registration. Prosecutors say he didn't list his place of employment as required by law.

Jasper County deputies arrested Van Hook in January of 2009.

They say he posted signs on bulletin boards across Jasper County, offering to babysit girls between 11 months and nine years old. The price was $12 for a weekend of babysitting four children, with the first weekend free of charge.

The sheriff said the ad should have been a red flag to parents.

Public records show that in the 1980's Van Hook served time for child indecency. In the 1990's he went to jail for indecency with a child by sexual contact. In 2001 Van Hook was sentenced for indecent exposure.

Victor Davidson - Repeat Sex Offender - 75 years

A sex offender will spend the next 75 years behind bars.

An Orange County judge said Victor Davidson had the most disturbing child pornography images she had ever seen.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Davidson has a history of lewd acts on children but has always managed to escape prosecution.

Hundreds of pictures and videos were found on Davidson's computer.

The Sheriff's Office said the sentencing was a huge success.
"Some people view these as just simply pictures,” said Sgt. KevIn Stenger from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “However, if you've ever had to watch a video with audio and hear the child scream, you would appreciate this is just not simply some sort of abstract image on this computer. This was a real child who was being tortured."
Under a new Florida law, the children seen in those pornography videos can write a letter to the court.

Two letters were read in Davidson's case, saying knowing those images are being downloaded and viewed by sex offenders has ruined their lives.

Ricky Rex Smith - Repeat Sex Offender - Receives Life in prison

A federal judge sentenced a Missouri man to spend the rest of his life in prison for the production of child pornography, a case with links to Ozark.

According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Montgomery, Ricky Randall Rex Smith, 55, pleaded guilty earlier this year to the charge that he videotaped himself sexually assaulting children. U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins said because Smith had previously been convicted of a state sex offense involving a child, he qualified for a mandatory life sentence.

Smith first came to the attention of law enforcement on New Year’s Eve 2005, after he walked off the job at a construction site in Ozark. Smith apparently left his truck and trailer with all his belongings inside it at a residence in Ozark.

According to the statement, Ozark Police filed a missing persons report on Smith under the name he’d given his employer, only to later find out that the man they were looking for had a 1983 conviction out of Crawford County, Mo., for sodomy of a child under fourteen, and that he had been a fugitive from justice for nearly 18 years.

U.S. prosecutors have said authorities arrested Smith about six months later in 2006. The statement said investigators found evidence of child pornography stashed inside a hidden compartment in Smith’s trailer.
Smith admitted at his plea hearing that he had filmed the sexual abuse of several children in his care, including a three-year-old girl, and that most of the abuse happened in May 2000, in Texas. Smith also confessed to transporting videotapes of the abuse into Dale County sometime in 2005.
“It is a priority in this district to protect children from child predators like Ricky Rex Smith, and we will continue our efforts to seek just punishment for their crime,” U.S. Attorney Leura G. Canary said in a written statement.

Agents with the FBI, the Ozark Police Department, the Dale County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri Probation and Parole Fugitive Unit worked the investigation.

WANTED - Yahye Abdisalan - Repeat Sex Offender

A convicted sex offender accused of assaulting two sisters inside their Twin Cities home escaped from authorities as they closed in on him, police said. Minneapolis police say 32-year-old Yahye Abdisalan quit his job, left his home, and may have left the state. They have been unable to serve a search warrant on Abdisalan since January.

Police say they are worried Abdisalan will hurt someone if his alleged sexual abuse in South Minneapolis is any indication for his future actions.

A neighbor who asked to stay nameless to protect her family said since she heard about what Abdisalan may have done, she has been fearful.

"It's so scary, very scary. Anybody who has children, they'll be really afraid that you're not safe in your home," the neighbor said.

She said she has even told her five children not to go out after dark.

"They have to catch him because if he did it before he's going to do it again and again," she said.

According to a warrant filed Thursday, Abdisalan used an unlocked window to break into a family's home on Portland Ave S in December.

Investigators say he then snuck upstairs and into a bedroom where two girls were sleeping. One of the girls awoke to find a man aroused and laying on top of her.

The man tried to attack the other girl. The parents of the children heard screams, entered the room and fought off the man. They chased him down the stairs where he escaped, police said.

Investigators say Abdisalan's DNA sample on file from a previous offense matches DNA taken from gloves found at the home and from a hat the girls' mother snatched off the suspects head as he ran away.

Ephraim Joe Aguirre II - Pedophile Teacher gets 30 years

United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced Tuesday that Chief United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii sentenced Ephraim Joe Aguirre II, 29, of Clovis, 30 years in prison to be followed by a lifetime term of supervised release for his conviction on two counts of receipt and distribution of child pornography. He must register as a sex offender and pay restitution to two victims depicted in the images.

This case was investigated by the Fresno Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, specifically the Clovis and Fresno Police Departments with assistance from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Fresno.

According to Assistant United States Attorney David Gappa, who prosecuted the case, the Clovis Police Department began investigating Aguirre after it received information about his possible sexual abuse of a 17-year-old victim. Aguirre had been a teacher at elementary, middle, and high schools in Fresno. Investigators confirmed that Aguirre had engaged in multiple criminal sexual acts with a former student and gave the former student a laptop. Investigators recovered images of child pornography that Aguirre had downloaded to the laptop and had attempted to delete.

When investigators reviewed the contents of a second computer belonging to Aguirre , they learned that he had used it to trade child pornography with dozens of other people throughout the United States and abroad. Aguirre also engaged in numerous graphic chat sessions with many of these people. He expressed his sexual interest in children and claimed to have molested a four-year-old and a twelve-year-old-girl.
" ... Occasionally I see a young girl walking, usually Black or Asian and there's been a few times where I've been tempted to drive up and snatch the kid ... I mean, just grab some poor wandering kid at nite, ... "
At sentencing Judge Ishii said that Aguirre “is a clear danger and threat to the public.”

Aguirre has been in custody since his initial appearance in federal court on December 1, 2008. He pleaded guilty on September 28, 2009.
“This sentence serves as a stern warning to other persons who possess and distribute child pornography and believe the anonymity of the Internet will shield them from detection,” said Paul Leonardi, resident agent in charge for ICE investigations in Fresno. “This case is particularly disturbing because the defendant used his position of authority to exploit innocent children, many of whom will bear the emotional scars of this trauma for the rest of their lives.”
This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s ongoing Project Safe Childhood initiative which was launched to increase federal prosecutions of sexual predators of children, and to reduce the number of Internet crimes against children including child pornography trafficking.

As a part of PSC, the United States Attorney’s Office has teamed with state and local agencies and organizations to increase law enforcement presence on the Internet, and to educate the public about safe Internet use, thereby reducing the risk that children might fall prey to online sexual predators.

Phillip Young - Repeat Sex Offender - Enabled by Urban League

A convicted pedophile refused to leave his cell for a court appearance Thursday morning.

A judge will now issue a drag order against Phillip Young.
The 44-year-old Young is accused of repeatedly molesting a young teenage boy while working as a case worker at the Buffalo Urban League.

What is raising additional concern is that Young was hired by the Urban League despite being a registered sex offender.
Young was previously convicted of sodomizing an 11 year-old boy back in 1995.

If convicted, he could spend the next three decades behind bars.

Maxwell “Scott” Coapman - Repeat Sex Offender - Charged witih Child Rape - Again

The trial for a registered sex offender charged with sexually abusing a child started in Cayuga County Court Tuesday. According to an indictment filed with the court, Maxwell “Scott” Coapman, 62, is charged with sexually abusing and raping a 12-year-old girl, a course of conduct that continued for almost two years.
Most of the incidents are alleged to have happened in Aurelius between June 5, 2008, and Feb. 2, 2009. Coapman, of 528 Turnpike Road, Cayuga, was designated a level-two sex offender after he was convicted in 1990 of two counts of second-degree felony rape. The victim in that case was also a child.

Level-two sex offenders are considered to pose a moderate risk of re-offending.

Coapman is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sex act, nine counts of second-degree criminal sex act and two counts of first-degree rape, all felonies. Coapman is also charged with eight counts of sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors.

Brian Mattes - Repeat Sex Offender - Gets 20 years

An Auburn man was sentenced Tuesday to nearly 20 years in prison for downloading child pornography from the Internet.

U.S. District Judge Glenn Suddaby sentenced Brian Mattes to 220 months behind bars. Mattes, 33, pleaded guilty last year to receiving and possessing child pornography over the Internet. The sentence was lengthy because Mattes had a previous federal conviction of possessing child pornography in Missouri in 2002, Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Fletcher said. He was sentenced to nearly three years in prison on that conviction.

The Cayuga County sheriff’s department charged Mattes last May with a violation as a registered sex offender, according to court papers. He was living in Auburn without having updated his address with the registry, court papers said. When sheriff’s Detective Frederick Cornelius interviewed Mattes in the home, he noticed several computers in the livingroom, Cornelius wrote in court papers. Mattes’ girlfriend said he was often on the Internet at all hours, the papers said.

Mattes initially denied to Cornelius that he had child pornography. Deputies obtained a search warrant and found 77 videos and 217 photographs of children performing sex acts and in sexually explicit positions, court papers said.

Brian Lasage - Repeat Sex Offender - Rapist

Shoeprints left at the scene of a sexual assault committed two months ago provided authorities with the evidence needed to charge a convicted sex offender with the attack, Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said.

Brian Lasage, 39, 1937 James Ortego Road, Mamou, is responsible for a pair of sexual assaults that happened four days apart in early January, both of them on East 37th Place in Cut Off.

Lasage, a convicted rapist, was charged Monday with sexual battery and aggravated burglary in connection with the Jan. 9 assault of a 24-year-old woman inside her home. He hasn't been formally charged for the Jan. 5 attack of a different 24-year-old woman because more physical evidence is needed, police said.

“This arrest takes a serious potential serial rapist off the streets of Lafourche,” Webre said.

Lasage's arrest should aid in the healing process for residents gripped by fear and anxiety since the attacks, residents and authorities said.

“This should help the public feel safer that the person who perpetrated these two incidents is behind bars,” said Judy Benitez, Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault's executive director.

Lasage, jailed since Jan. 10, is already charged for failing to register as a sex offender. The violation makes him ineligible for release on bond.
Lasage's sex-offender status stems from his 1991 conviction in Jennings for forcible rape. He served 15 years in prison for the crime. If a judge determines Lasage violated his probation, he would have to serve the remainder of his sentence, which lasts until 2021.
Authorities identified Lasage as a “person of interest” in the south Lafourche assaults shortly after his initial arrest.

On Friday, sheriff's officials received written notification from the State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge that a footprint lifted from the site of the Jan. 9 attack matched shoes Lasage wore when arrested, Webre said.

Authorities still await the return of physical evidence from the first Jan. 5 assault.

That case is “tougher,” Webre said, because less physical evidence is available.

Authorities say they believe the two cases were committed by the same attacker because he:

n Called the women by their first names.

n Was armed with a knife.

n Concealed his face with an article of clothing.

Though Lasage knew his victim's names, detectives say it's unlikely they were acquainted. Authorities are still trying to determine how he gathered information about them.

Webre called Lasage a “classic sexual predator.”

Even though an arrest has been made, people should continue to take precautions, Benitez said.

Residents of East 37th Place interviewed for this story said they intend to heed that advice.

“We're going to keep our doors locked and our eyes open,” said a 27-year-old mother of two who asked that her name be withheld because of security concerns.

“We never had a problem with anyone coming down the street,” she said. “The kids could play outside. Now, I don't let them go out by themselves.”
