Thomas Lee Nickels - Repeat Sex Offender - Trolling the Net for Victims

"Yes." said Nickels' mom. "We're pretty sure
we've reached the pinnacle. He has to do time."

In an investigation similar to the ones seen on "Dateline NBC's Top Catch a Predator," Hamilton county's Cyber Crimes Task Force surfs the web. Agents pose as teens. Sex chats start with adults and suspects are arrested. Those chats on the Internet helped police net Thomas Lee Nickels.

Sgt. Gerry Hepp with Fishers Police says "The task force arrested 3 people. Mr. Nickels is someone who caught our attention after the arrest."

In one week here, officers made three arrests, Kevin Livengood, screen name "running naked", Michael Nyberg and Thomas Nickels.

Sgt. Hepp says "We found that he was a registered sex offender. He physically harmed a child in 2003."

A 2003 police report shows the victim, who was only nine, was sexually molested and shown child porn on the Internet. Now, five years later, Hepp says "He can go home in the privacy of wherever he is and look for potential victims again."

In 2003 The court ordered Nickels to stay on the sex offender registry for life. Then this month, Police found Nickels in the chat rooms, seeking oral sex and more, with what he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

Flooding washed out one planned meet with the undercover cops. But last week Nickels turned up for a second one and police busted him.

The suspect's neighbor Joe Mentink says "That is frightening because we have a lot of young people in this complex." Nickels' neighbors discovered him on the state sex offender registry months ago and spread the word.

They value the web site.

"That has been a godsend," say Mentink. "We really like that. And you check that, yes, yes."

The suspect's mother was packing up his condo Wednesday night. We asked if her son has a problem. Effie Nickels said "Apparently. Now it's come to an end." She says Nickels did no prison time in 2003.

"Does he have remorse, does he regret this?", we asked.

"Yes." said Nickels' mom. "We're pretty sure we've reached the pinnacle. He has to do time."

Irvine G. Oelke Sr. - 73 year old Repeat Sex Offender

"If the defendant is still attempting to abduct children
at the age of 73, he is still a threat
and should go to jail, regardless of his age"

Oelke was convicted in 2004 of sex abuse of a minor for
inappropriately touching a 3-year-old girl

Irvine G. Oelke Sr., told a judge Tuesday that he hadn't intended to harm the little girl he invited into his car one warm evening last summer -- that he was only "being friendly" when he asked if she wanted to get some ice cream with him.

The explanation from the convicted sex offender did not sway the judge.

"If the defendant is still attempting to abduct children at the age of 73, he is still a threat and should go to jail, regardless of his age," Baltimore County Circuit Judge H. Patrick Stringer Jr. said.

He sentenced Oelke to seven years in prison -- even more than the prosecutor had requested and much more than the supervised probation that a defense attorney argued would be appropriate for the retiree with health problems.

"I shudder to think what could have happened had this little girl gotten into the car," the judge said, adding that Emily Tuzzolo's parents had obviously taught her well about the hazards of talking to strangers. "But for that, I'm not sure what would have happened."

The sentencing hearing brought to a close a case in which police and prosecutors say the girl's parents and neighbors in the close-knit block of Dundalk families did everything right.

Neighbors watching as the man stopped his dark sedan at dusk to talk to the little girl on her pink bike took note of the man and his car.

They called the police.

And when Emily's mother produced a police-like photo array of men living within two miles of their Dundalk neighborhood from the state's Sex Offender Registry, two neighbors and Emily all picked out Oelke.

"On that day, you, sir, came to the wrong neighborhood," Emily's mother, Lucinda Tuzzolo, wrote in a letter to the defendant that the prosecutor read aloud at the sentencing hearing.

"This is a community that came together and will always work together to keep people like you off our block."

It was nearly dusk on Aug. 15 when Emily climbed out of her family's backyard pool, changed her clothes and set off on her new bicycle to find her friend, who lives at the end of her block.

There, at the corner of Patapsco and West Dundalk avenues, the friend's father was watching his nine children.

He was still watching when a man in a dark sedan and a dark baseball cap pulled up to the stop sign and started talking to Emily.

The girl, who was 6 at the time, later told police that the stranger asked whether she had a brother and offered her ice cream if she got into his car, according to court records. Emily did not answer the man. Instead, she climbed back on her bike and pedaled away.

Across the street, another neighbor had just stepped off a bus when she saw the dark sedan parked at the corner. She later told police that she got a good look at the car -- and the man at the wheel -- as he drove off.

Both neighbors identified Oelke as the man who approached Emily, first in the images that her mother printed off the state's Sex Offender Registry and then in a photo array by police.

Oelke was convicted in Cecil County in 2004 of sex abuse of a minor for inappropriately touching a 3-year-old girl and sentenced to 18 months in jail and 18 months of supervised probation.

In April, he entered an Alford plea in the Baltimore County case, in which he acknowledged that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him of attempted child kidnapping without admitting guilt.

Defense attorney Kimberley P. McGee told the judge Tuesday that her client did so because although he admits that he spoke to Emily and asked if she wanted ice cream, but that he maintains that he didn't intend to take her anywhere or hurt her.

Oelke retired at age 62, after spending four years in the Navy and working a series of jobs as a truck driver, accounting clerk and a housekeeper at an apartment complex, McGee said. His wife died of cancer in 2000, leaving him depressed and lonely, and he suffered a stroke in 2005, the defense attorney said.

McGee told the judge that her client's 80-year-old sister explained that the stroke left her brother without "a filter" that might otherwise keep him from saying or doing certain things.

Given a chance to address the judge, Oelke asked his attorney where in the nearly empty courtroom the victim's parents were sitting.

"I want to apologize for frightening you," he said, turning to face them. "I meant no harm. I was just being friendly."

Lucinda Tuzzolo broke down in tears and turned as far away from Oelke as she could, while her husband, Bobby Tuzzolo, simply stared at the man.

Prosecutor Stephanie Porter told the judge that Oelke's explanation -- that he was on his way that evening to a Royal Farms store for ice cream and thought to invite the little girl when he saw her -- doesn't make sense.

Reminding the judge that Emily was approached on a one-way street that serves as more of an alley off the main road, she said, "There is no reason to go up that side street unless you live there or had a specific reason. I would suggest that he went up there for the specific reason to find Emily or someone like her. ... I don't believe the community is safe with him in it."

The prosecutor asked the judge to sentence Oelke to five years in prison.

Stringer, the judge, said he was most concerned with protecting the community's children and deterring the defendant -- and others -- from "preying on children."

He sentenced Oelke to 10 years in prison, suspending all but seven years of that term. He also ordered that Oelke serve three years of probation upon his release and have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

Angelo Collado - Repeat Sex Offender - Hiding in the bushes........

Collado was classified as a sexual predator after his 1994 conviction for attempting to rape a boy. Collado served 13 years in prison before his release last year. Records show he is still under the supervision of the Adult Parole Authority.

A 33-year-old sexual predator living in Lorain, accused of videotaping a woman and her 10-year-old daughter at Lakeview Park beach ,was arraigned Monday. Angelo Colladois charged with two counts of voyeurism and obstructing official business. He initially pleaded no contest, but changed the plea to not guilty after a public defender was assigned to his case. Lorain Police were called to the beach Saturday when someone complained that a man was videotaping children at the beach. Collado was arrested after officers found him hiding in overgrown weeds with a video camera. Collado denied the camera was his and said he found it.

When police turned the camera on they found four videos, according to the report.

The first was of a woman on the beach that zoomed in on her rear end.

The second was of a young girl and that also zoomed in on her rear.

The third video was footage of a bathroom stall at the beach. Although no people appeared in this video, officers identified the coat of the man holding the camera as Collado's.

The fourth video showed Collado getting into his tub at home. He waved at the camera and then masturbated.

The woman in the first film was upset when police informed her of the footage. Two witnesses told police that they saw Collado taping the woman.

Collado was classified as a sexual predator after his 1994 conviction for attempting to rape a boy. Collado served 13 years in prison before his release last year. Records show he is still under the supervision of the Adult Parole Authority.

His bond was set at $7,500.

If convicted of all charges he faces a maximum of 90 days in jail or $750 fine for the obstruction charge and up to 60 days or $500 for each of the voyeurism charges. His pre-trial date is scheduled for Thursday.

The new charges are misdemeanors, but he could be sent back to prison for violating the conditions of parole.

Larry D. Goff - Repeat Sex Offender with Enabling Wife

In the past year, records show that deputies have gone to Goff's home about 15 times. Once, authorities accused him of choking his wife, slamming her onto a bed and punching her in the face.

A registered sex offender crept into an elderly woman's home and tried to molest her early Monday, deputies say.

Investigators found a latex glove at the woman's home, in the Tri-Par Estates mobile home park, and arrested Larry D. Goff about 4:30 a.m.

Deputies say the woman, 75, was awakened by a hand creeping up her nightgown, and recognized her attacker as Goff, who also lives in the mobile home park, deputies said.

She screamed and he ran.

When deputies confronted Goff, he was sweaty and wearing the same clothes -- a black T-shirt and black shorts -- that the woman said her attacker wore.

Deputies say they found a pair of black boots in his closet, still wet. A box of latex gloves was in a bathroom cabinet in the home. Goff was charged with attempted sexual battery.

The woman, whose identity is being withheld by the Herald-Tribune because of the nature of the crime, was shaken but unhurt. She left her home to stay with family members.

"It's awful what he did," said a son-in-law from New Hampshire. "Just sickening."

Goff, 47, has arrests dating back to the 1980s for burglary, assault and drug possession.

In 1991, he was charged with raping a woman. Details of that case were not immediately available. But the charge landed Goff on Florida's sex offender database, which requires offenders to register with law enforcement and alert neighbors about their past when they move.

Goff's wife, Judith, says that Tri-Par residents have fought with the couple since they moved there about five years ago.

The park has a 55-and-older age restriction, and neighbors tried to have Goff evicted because of the age requirements -- and his criminal history, his wife said.

Judith Goff said she was at home asleep and her husband was in bed next to her when the break-in occurred.

Goff, who is out of work and collects disability payments, took medicine for depression and went to sleep about 2:30 a.m., his wife says.

Judith Goff said she woke up when police banged on the door and her husband was still in bed. She said she does not believe he attacked the neighbor and thinks the charge is a conspiracy brought by Tri-Par residents who want Goff to move out.

Judith Goff, 65, won her dispute with the park and her husband was allowed to stay because her name is on the mortgage. Since then, though, Judith Goff says her neighbors have made her life "a living hell."

"Nothing but trouble," she said. "They have nothing better to do than meddle in our lives, gossip about Larry because of his past. I'm just so sick and tired of it."

Larry Goff is being held without bail at Sarasota County jail.

In the past year, records show that deputies have gone to Goff's home about 15 times. Once, authorities accused him of choking his wife, slamming her onto a bed and punching her in the face.

She later called the fight a disagreement and prosecutors dropped a criminal charge against him.

Glenn Canfield - Repeat Sex Offender - Only lasted 5 weeks

Glenn had been in the program only five weeks before his arrest

Police arrested a registered sex offender Saturday afternoon after four girls said he showed them his genitals.

Glenn Canfield, 28, was temporarily out of prison in a community transition program Saturday when the girls said he followed them to the Taco Bell at 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue and exposed himself.

Sioux Falls police spokesman Sam Clemens said the girls waved down police after a man showed them his genitals outside the restaurant.

They said he had following them on a bicycle for about an hour.

The girls pointed the man out to police, who arrested Canfield for indecent exposure and indecent exposure involving a child.

The community transition program is intended to prepare inmates for life on parole by helping them find work and save money. Department of Corrections statistics show three of every four inmates who go on the program graduate and are placed in the community.

Canfield, who is in prison for attempted second-degree rape, had been in the program only five weeks before his arrest, Parole board director Ed Ligtenberg said.

Canfield had been sentenced to a prison term of 12 years and six months in Lawrence County in 2002.

Another busted in SoHopeful's pedo ring

SHE was a girl most police around the world thought had been lost to the violent hand of her abuser.
As a Queensland-led investigation smashed the oldest and most sophisticated internet pedophile ring ever known, the tortured face of the child haunted law enforcement agencies in 20 countries, who had been unable to find out who she was, where she lived and how to rescue her.

For two years, police had watched her grow up on film.

Thousands of pictures and movies had been shot of her being abused, sometimes at knifepoint, with the series becoming a "collector's item" among the insidious network of pedophiles. A commonwealth government employee living in Townsville is one of them. As police moved to arrest the 22 ringleaders, and hundreds of other voyeurs who enjoyed their often made-to-order films, there was an overwhelming fear that the international dragnet was about to trigger her death.

"He knows we are closing in, we are very worried he is going to kill her, if she hasn't already been killed," one of the lead investigators privately told The Australian in March.
At the time, there was little known about the girl: just the country in which she lived and that she was about nine years of age. Despite fading hopes, police - led by Task Force Argos, the Queensland Police Service's child sex unit - never gave up the search. Hundreds of investigators, including the FBI, trawled for tens of thousands of hours looking for clues to her identity among the captured catalogue of depravity that had been her life.

It paid off. On Tuesday night, FBI agents raided the US home of the abuser - James "Bart" Huskey, who gave her the pseudonym of "Tara" on the internet - and took her to safety.

According to an FBI affidavit, obtained by The Australian, Tara had been raped by Huskey, 38, the previous day. Not surprisingly, it was captured on film and destined to be shared with thousands on the internet.

Huskey, a married tennis coach from the southern state of Georgia with two children, is now behind bars in a high-security jail in Atlanta after being charged with abusing Tara and filming and photographing the offences over a four-year period.

Like many of his fellow ringleaders, he is facing decades in jail under tough new US federal laws covering the booming trade of child pornography on the internet. Already, Huskey has allegedly admitted to molesting the child.

"(He) stated that he had several thousand images of (the girl's) molestation and several hundred videos of sexual molestation on an external hard drive connected to his desktop computer," the affidavit said.

Not that it was needed, but the young girl also confirmed what had happened.

"She disclosed that (Huskey) had been sexually abusing her for years, and had ... raped her within the last day," said the affidavit.
Back at Brisbane's Argos police unit, the arrest and rescue of Tara was received with a mixture of joy, pride and, most of all, relief. The beer then flowed.

Queensland's Child Safety and Sexual Crime group chief, Detective Superintendent Peter Crawford, who oversaw the investigation, said it was difficult to describe the reaction to the news.

"We were ecstatic," he finally offered. "It keeps people motivated and lets us all know that the work we do here, from Australia, can be a benefit to kids all around the world. It's a distasteful job and all of us have the best interests of the kids at heart, and some of these cases are going to really get at you. Tara was one of those cases."

For the Argos team and Crawford, who was awarded the Australian Police medal this month for his work, the mystery of Tara had soured any sense of jubilation earlier this year about leading the charge that helped to bring down the world's worst known internet pedophiles.

"It required us, and later the FBI, to go through all of the images and carefully, methodically look for clues," he said.

The search for Tara was an exercise daunting in its size and complexity, involving tens of thousands of hours of work, and would have put any Hollywood script in the shade.

According to Crawford, Argos investigators began to suspect this year that Tara was living in the US. The alleged offender had his face pixellated in all of the images and movies, and was, so he thought, extremely cautious about restricting geographically identifying features that appeared in the background.

An FBI agent was dispatched from the US to Brisbane to join in the laborious task of looking for clues within the notorious "Tara series".

"We had this suspicion about the US," Crawford said. "But when we were looking at the images as Australians, not knowing American culture or regions, there were things that meant nothing to us. She (the FBI agent) was able to look at the images and say this might be a certain geographical area, and progressively refine the search."

The first big break came around the new year, when they discovered pictures of Tara inside a car. They were then shown to US automotive manufacturers, who were able to pinpoint the car as a being a 2003-2005 Pontiac Aztek with exterior "sunburst orange" metallic paint. Just before the car clue emerged, the FBI had begun looking at a painting - titled Inspired Hillsides - that could be seen in the background of a hotel room in one of the sex-abuse films. Investigators then scoured the records of all sales in the US of paintings with the same or similar titles. They soon discovered a copy of the painting had been sold to a small motel in Carrolton, Georgia.

In the FBI affidavit, the investigators revealed that the alleged abuser had titled one of his films "2007 Tara 8yo - gets (assaulted with a sexual device) - July 21, 2007".

A search of the motel register offered up Huskey's name, who had declared at the time that he was driving a van.

But a subsequent search discovered that a 2005 Pontiac Aztek was registered to a woman, who The Australian believes is the man's wife. The FBI then trawled through the internet's plethora of chatrooms and social networking sites, including MySpace. They uncovered a MySpace account registered to the woman.

"Background interior images on ... MySpace account match background interior images on the 'Tara' series images," the FBI affidavit said.

The FBI had enough to move.

The obstacles that the Australian and US police overcame to find Tara cannot be overstated. Police say the reason the pedophiles had not been caught, or even detected as a network, was their level of security.

To get into the inner sanctum, a member had to go through stages of passwords, highly sophisticated encryption and codenames. Even the location of their IP servers was disguised. Most, it is believed, did not even know the real location or identity of each other. There was even a guidebook providing the dos and don'ts of avoiding detection and protecting hard drives in the event of a raid. Police had not seen anything like it before.

"They would change their passwords on a regular basis, they would change their encryption keys on a regular basis and use codenames even within the group," Crawford said.

The level of protection, and years of operating with immunity, allowed them to trade freely and speak openly.

Before being broken, members of the network even boasted among themselves of being able to "defeat" any law enforcement agency in the world.

"This is the greatest group of pedos to ever gather in one place," one member crowed. "And I'm honoured just to be a part of it." Their seeming invincibility was to be their undoing. It all began to unravel in January 2006 when New Zealand police, who, like Argos officers, are constantly trawling the internet, came across them.

Crawford said Argos did a preliminary investigation to establish that it was a job worth doing. "To be honest, we were not sure if we could break through the security, but we wanted to try," he said.

Crawford is guarded about how it was done, but Argos officers were able to infiltrate the group.

Flowing from Operation Achilles, more than 2500 "customers" of child sex websites have been identified, with 100, including a US reserve police officer and the Australian federal bureaucrat, arrested and charged.

Just as importantly, 70 children worldwide, including a four-year-old Brisbane girl, have been rescued.

David Gunderson - Repeat Sex Offender gets LIFE plus 100 years

A repeat sex offender convicted of burglary and attempted rape has been sentenced to life plus 100 years in prison with no parole.

District Judge Gregory Todd says the lengthy sentence handed down yesterday stemmed from 53-year-old David Gunderson's record of committing sexually violent crimes. A psychologist also has concluded that Gunderson wouldn't benefit from sex offender treatment.

Gunderson was convicted in February of entering a 23-year-old woman's apartment last spring and attacking her as she slept.

His criminal record began when he was sent to a youth detention facility for molesting a child. He has had several convictions for sex crimes since.

Jesse E. Cleary - Pedophile BabySitter - Convicted

A Bay City man will spend between 23 and 50 years in prison for the physical and sexual abuse of a young girl who was under his care while her mother was at work.

Jesse E. Cleary, who lived at 910 N. Grant St., pleaded guilty Friday to one count of first degree criminal sexual contact and two counts of second degree CSC. Cleary received sentences of eight to 15 years each for the two counts of second degree CSC. Sentences are to run concurrently and Cleary will get credit for 256 days already served.

In exchange for his plea, five counts of criminal sexual conduct against the girl's two younger brothers were dropped, though the abuse against the boys was considered for purposes of sentencing, said J. Dee Brooks, Bay County assistant prosecutor.

The abuse took place between 2004 and 2007. The oldest child, then 10, told her mother of the abuse in September 2007. Cleary forced her to perform oral sex on him at least 15 times, starting when she was 8 years old. He would also put all the children in his bed and order them to rub him sexually, beating and choking them when they didn't perform as he instructed.

The two younger children were 4 and 8 at the time. All three told investigators that Cleary had threatened to kill their mother if they told anyone about the activities, and showed them a gun while making the threat.

"This was a very horrendous child sexual abuse case," said Bay County Prosecutor Kurt C. Asbury, "In fact, I think it's one of the worse I've ever seen in my 22-plus years as a prosecutor.

Both Cleary, 35, and his attorney, Edward M. Czuprynski, on Friday asked Bay County Circuit Judge William J. Caprathe to take consideration of Cleary's cooperation with law enforcement officials when sentencing him.

"I realize that my client has been convicted of some serious (offenses) and has been projected in a negative light this morning," Czuprynski told the court. When the abuse came to light, Czuprynski said, Cleary was cooperative, has been remorseful and contrite, and did not want to put the child through a trial.

"Once in the system his chief concern ... was about minimizing, to the extent that he could, the trauma to the little girl," Czuprynski said, adding that Cleary "scratches his head to this day, wondering why it ever happened."

Cleary addressed the court, saying he has been compliant and wanted no more emotional trauma for the children involved.

"I'm very sorry for what has happened," Cleary said. "I was drinking and using drugs excessively at the time."

Asbury said that's not an excuse.

"It's my position there can never be acceptable excuses to abuse a child and these cases will continue to be a top priority in my office," Asbury said.

Cleary talked about his own two children who are suffering because he's not in their life.

But Caprathe wasn't moved to go outside of sentencing guidelines.

"I really don't hear the defendant's admission to the responsibility," Caprathe said.

Cleary had said he wanted to go to trial but accepted the plea to spare the children.

"Which leads the court to believe that he doesn't feel he's really responsible," Caprathe said. "I'm hearing mixed messages."

Perhaps a more convincing argument came from the victims themselves, who told a tale of being punched and kicked, having their heads thrust into a toilet full of urine and having food withdrawn when they didn't do what Cleary wanted - a punishment that was particularly serious for one of the boys, a diabetic.

They told of being shown pornographic movies and then being forced to act out things that were done in the movies with each other and with Cleary.

"I'm here today to tell you what a bad person Jesse is," the older boy had written. He and his younger brother stood at the podium, less than 10 feet from where Cleary sat, while his words were read aloud by Stephanie Cornejo, sexual assault case manager for the Bay Area Women's Center.

"Every single day I had to deal with him punching me and hitting me," Cornejo read. "I have a hard time being around my sister because I feel weird ... I hate Jesse more than anything in the world."

The girl tried to read her statement but had to stop because she was crying. She said she was 6 when the abuse started.

"Do you know what it's like to look at my brother every day?" Cornejo read for her. "I think Jesse is a pedophile and a psycho and he should be put in prison for the rest of his life."

John Rodriguez - Repeat Sex Offender - Compulsive Perverted Pedophile

"The evidence of him violating the children were so graphic we didn't think we could show it to a jury," Morgan said. "He would drug the children to the point of incapacitation. The girls were like limp dolls."

A repeat sex offender from Beverly was sentenced to 30 years in state prison today for sexually assaulting four girls after drugging them first and videotaping the attacks.

Defendant John Rodriguez, 48, apologized and said he "hurts dearly" and realizes he needs help, explaining he was sexually abused as a child by a relative and swimming instructor and believed that was "how love was shown."

NO EXCUSES

In sentencing him as a compulsive sex offender, Superior Court Judge Patricia LeBon imposed a 30-year prison term - three consecutive 10-year terms on three counts of aggravated sexual assault against three of the 7 to 14-year-old victims, all of whom he knew.

Three lesser sentences for endangering the welfare of a child and making pornography using videotapes were consolidated with that sentence.

Kevin Morgan, assistant Burlington County prosecutor, said the videotaped acts were vile and that Rodriguez suffers from a repetitive and complusive condition for which even his doctors say there is no hope of a cure.

"The evidence of him violating the children were so graphic we didn't think we could show it to a jury," Morgan said. "He would drug the children to the point of incapacitation. The girls were like limp dolls."

Morgan said the defendant's stupidity in making the tapes led to his arrest after they were found by a woman whom the prosecutor did not identify.

Rodriguez was persuaded to plead guilty Feb. 25 to six charged in a 68-count Burlington County indictment alleging sex acts with the children from February 2005 to July 2006.

The defendant served a five-year prison term for a 1986 sexual assault on a child but he said his term ended before he could complete treatment at the state Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center at Avenel.

Rodriguez would be at least 71 before he is eligible for parole because he must serve at least 25 and half years in prison. He also was convicted of illegal sexual contact with an adult 1992 before the stricter Megan's Law sex offender act was passed.

Alfred Balcerak - Repeat Sex Offender

Conviction date: 3/19/1998
Sexual Abuse 1st:Sexual Contact With Individual Less Than 11Years Old
Offender's age at conviction: 39
Victim Age: 9

Balcerak is listed as a Level 2 Sex Offender on the New York State Sex Offender Registry.
Balcerak, 49, opened an upholstery store in April, and about a month later allegedly began sexually abusing two boys there, Nassau County Police 1st Squad detectives said.

A police investigation was initiated when the mother of one of the victims saw Balcerak's picture on the state Sex Offender Registry Web site. One of the boys was 13 years old, and the other 14. Neither was physically injured during the alleged abuse.

Balcerak lured the boys with promises of odd jobs and then "rough-housed" with them, allegedly touching their genitals, according to Detective Lt. Karl Schoepp, commanding officer of the 1st Squad.

Balcerak was arrested at a friend's home in Long Beach after a brief investigation, and was arraigned in First District Court on Monday. He was ordered held on $250,000 bond or $100,000 cash bail.

In December he was arrested and sentenced to 45 days in jail and three years' probation, after he failed to register his address with the Sex Offender Registry.

Luis Flores - a convicted child molester - Repeat Sex Offender

A 43-year-old registered sex offender is back in custody on charges of sodomizing his 27-year-old roommate Thursday afternoon and later physically assaulting the man in their shared apartment in San Carlos.

Luis Flores - a convicted child molester, according to the state's sex offender database - was found hiding in another apartment in his neighborhood on Thursday night.

Police were called to Flores' apartment in the 1100 block of Laurel Street at about 9:45 p.m. to respond to a report of a battery in progress. When officers arrived, they found Flores' roommate on the sidewalk outside the apartment building, San Carlos police Sgt. Mark Robbins said.

The man told police he had just been physically assaulted by Flores, Robbins said. According to the alleged victim, Flores had sodomized him against his will earlier that day, the officer added.

Authorities transferred the man to San Mateo County General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Flores and his alleged victim had been roommates for a while, said Cmdr. Jon Read, who declined to specify the nature of the two men's relationship.

No domestic violence charges were brought by police, Read said.

Instead, Flores was booked in the county jail at 7 a.m. Friday on suspicion of one felony count of sodomy of an unconscious victim, one felony count of sexual penetration with a foreign object and one misdemeanor count of battery, Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Flores, who is in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.

If convicted of all the charges, he faces 10 years in state prison.

Scott F. Lurken - Repeat Sex Offender - Multiple Victims

"We have reason to be very concerned that there are many other child victims out there who have not yet come forward"

Authorities in Palm Bay are looking into the possibility Thursday that one sex offender had more victims that they thought.

Scott F. Lurken was arrested on four counts of lewd and lascivious conduct and one count of sexual battery and booked into the Brevard County Jail, according to a press release.

A 9-year-old reported sexual battery and an 11-year-old girl said Lurken kissed her on the lips with his eyes closed while rubbing her back and stomach. Then, on June 1, a new victim, a 13-year-old girl, came forward and claimed that a similar situation involving Lurken happened to her, according to the press release.

"We have reason to be very concerned that there are many other child victims out there who have not yet come forward," said Detective Greg Guillette of the Special Victims Unit in a press release. "Many times these victims are afraid to come forward, but it's important in order to protect others."

Leonard Auerbach - Sex Tourist Fugitive

According to the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco, Auerbach was accused of travelling to Costa Rica for "child sex tourism" more than 40 times between 2003 and 2007.

Cuba announced Friday it had handed an American accused of travelling abroad to have sex with children over to the United States in a rare sign of judicial cooperation between the two countries.

The Cuban foreign ministry said it had deported to the United States Leonard Auerbach, a California mortgage banker who was pursued by U.S. authorities on charges of repeatedly going to Costa Rica to have sex with minors, and possession of child pornography.

The ministry said Auerbach, 61, arrived in Cuba on April 8 from Mexico "in order to escape U.S. justice."

It said that based on information submitted by U.S. authorities, he was detained in Cuba on May 7, and then handed over due to the "serious" charges against him.

It did not say how Auerbach was transferred to the United States.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco, Auerbach was accused of travelling to Costa Rica for "child sex tourism" more than 40 times between 2003 and 2007.

Auerbach was declared a fugitive after failing to appear in court for arraignment April 9.

He is the fourth American handed by Cuba to U.S. authorities since July 2006, when Raul Castro took over the presidency from his ailing brother Fidel Castro.

In October, Cuba deported John Bradley Egan, who faced charges of bank fraud and identity theft, after the suspect was detained when his yacht suffered mechanical problems in Cuban waters.

In April 2007, Cuban authorities handed over Joseph Adjmi, who had been a U.S. fugitive since 1963, when he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for mail fraud.

David Ray Franklin, who stole a plane and fled to Cuba with his son, was handed to the United States in October 2006.

The United States has recognized some Cuban cooperation, but diplomats in Havana said about 70 per cent cases remain.

Cuba has only occasionally handed over suspects to the United States in half a century of communist rule on the island.

George Quintero - Repeat Sex Offender

A Salem man was arraigned Thursday on charges of sexually assaulting a girl at his home last year.

George Quintero, 43, was charged with sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl at his Wheeler avenue house. Police said Quintero is a convicted sex offender, and he knew the girl.

Salem police said they became aware of the case when Massachusetts authorities said they were investigating similar allegations made in the Bay State.

"We were notified and contacted by the Medford, Mass., police department, who were conducting a parallel investigation for the same type of issue," Capt. Shawn Patten said. "Through that investigation, it was determined that some of the crimes were committed in Salem."

Police said that while the Massachusetts allegations were being investigated, the girl, now 9, told authorities that Quintero had sexual contact with her in February 2007.

Quintero was charged in New Hampshire with one count of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of felonious sexual assault. He has not been charged in Massachusetts.

According to court records, Quintero was convicted by the U.S. military of murder and rape in Germany and served 17 years of a 27-year sentence. Police said the victim in that case was an adult.

"This person landed on the sex offender register due to a crime he was convicted of in 1985 with regards to a homicide and forcible rape," Patten said.

Although Quintero was a registered sex offender, because his victim was an adult, he was not included on a public registry.

Quintero was ordered held on $250,000 bail.

David Edmund Kinsey - Repeat Sex Offender

A Valley man who is a registered sex offender is accused of fondling a 60-year-old woman and sexually assaulting another woman in her motorized scooter while naked.David Edmund Kinsey, 38, was arrested by Phoenix police at his Tempe home June 2, according to a report released Thursday.

Kinsey is accused in two incidents.

The first took place March 5 in Phoenix where Kinsey allegedly fondled a 63-year-old woman in a common laundry room near Cave Creek Road and 7th Street.

The second incident happened March 20th near Thomas Road and 7th Street.

This time, a 40-year-old woman was in her motorized scooter chair out in public when Kinsey pulled up alongside in his silver Nissan pickup truck.

He was naked and when he stepped out of the truck, he sexually assaulted the woman before driving away, according to the report.

Investigators from Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale and Scottsdale police departments believe Kinsey is involved in more than a dozen cases of indecent exposure.

Additional charges against Kinsey are expected as investigators compare information.

There are no known cases at this time in Tempe, where Kinsey resided.

Police believe Kinsey would drive to various locations in his silver Nissan pickup truck looking for women in the 40 to 70-year-old age range.

He would stop and ask the woman a question and when the woman stepped near his truck, Kinsey would expose himself or already be naked.

Kinsey’s arrest is now being made public since investigators have completed photo lineups with a number of victims or witnesses.

“These all took place in very public places.” Sgt. Joe Tranter said. “He could go mobile without anyone knowing.”

Tranter said they tracked him down after a tip came in from a woman who saw an ABC15 report last week.

Clifford Deed - Repeat Sex Offender

A quick-thinking teenage girl who was home alone in east Stockton managed to avoid harm by locking herself in a bathroom and calling police after a registered sex offender broke into her house, police said.

Police arrested parolee Clifford Deed at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday after he forced his way into the house.

Authorities said Deed kicked in the back door, at which time the 15-year-old hid in the bathroom.

The girl remained calm and called 911 as Deed burglarized the house, police said.

At one point, Deed attempted to force his way into the bathroom but the girl held her body against the door and prevented him from entering, police said.

Officers soon arrived and arrested Deed.

Prior to the arrest, Deed was being housed at the the Stockton Motor Inn on East Charter Way along with other parolees.

Police said Deed told them he was walking around this neighborhood and just decided to break into the home.

Deed was booked into jail on suspicion of burglary and a parole hold.

Andrew Scot Coslett - Repeat Sex Offender on MySpace

The mother of a 12-year-old girl researched a Longmont man who contacted the girl on My-Space and discovered he is a sex offender who failed to register, according to police.

Longmont Police Cmdr. Tim Lewis said on Wednesday that officers arrested Andrew Scot Coslett, 30, on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and are investigating his online conduct with the girl.

Lewis stopped short of calling the online conversations between Coslett and the girl “sexual.”

“We don’t like the context of them,” Lewis said. “They were of an inappropriate nature.”

Lewis said Coslett knew the girl and sought her out on the social-networking site. The girl’s age was not in question and Coslett did not seek to hide his identity with the girl, Lewis said.

Coslett was convicted in 2000 of attempted sexual assault on a child in Jefferson County.

In that case, Coslett was arrested as part of a sting when he showed up to a meeting place arranged on the Internet anticipating sex with a 14-year-old girl. Instead, he met police officers.

He was sentenced to three years in the Colorado Department of Corrections and is required to register as a sex offender.

Lewis said the Longmont girl’s mother did exactly what she needed to do to protect her daughter.

“This is what we ask parents to do — know what their kids are doing and and be involved in their lives,” he said.

Police are investigating whether Coslett was communicating with any other children. His MySpace display name is “drewssiffer,” according to police.

Antonín Novák - Czech Pedophile Murderer Rapist

The rape and murder of 9-year-old Jakub Šimánek from Havlíčkův Brod has shocked the nation, leading to questions why more wasn’t done to keep track of the suspect - a repeat sex offender from neighbouring Slovakia. The Slovak national spent years in detention and upon release was ordered to undergo outpatient treatment. The fact that he didn’t should have set the alarm bells ringing.

The sex-abuse murder of a nine-year-old boy in the Czech-Moravian highlands has left many in the Czech Republic deeply shocked. Images of the boy as well as his grieving family have been broadcast repeatedly on television, bringing home the grim reality and leading many to ask themselves simply “How could this happen?”. Nine-year-old Jakub disappeared in May but his body was only uncovered at the weekend after police arrested a suspect - a Slovak national with a history of sex offences. He led them to the place where he’d hidden the child’s body. In addition, the suspect, named Antonín Novák, admitted to the abuse of ten other boys throughout the country, leaving the police to retrace his steps. It is believed that he targeted little boys on playgrounds or near supermarkets. Additional crimes have not been ruled out.

What is the dominant factor that led to the recent tragedy? Above all, that officials in neighbouring Slovakia failed to alert their international counterparts that Mr Novák’s whereabouts were unknown and that he was considered dangerous. Such mistakes can begin as easily as a psychiatrist failing to contact the courts or police when a patient ordered to undergo treatment fails to show up. Petr Weiss, a respected Czech sex therapist, says the problem is not in the system itself, but rather a lack of diligence on the part of doctors.

“The system itself is not bad but it happens that the rules are not always followed properly. If somebody doesn’t follow through with outpatient treatment ordered by the court, the doctor should contact the court. But often they don’t, and untreated patients can be very dangerous. For many psychiatrists sex offenders are often a very marginal group of patients as they have schizophrenics and people with other ailments so sex offenders are often not at the centre of their focus.”

Unchecked, it was only a small step for Antonín Novák to travel undetected within Schengen, as well as to live in the Czech Republic under an assumed name. Dr Weiss and others say what would help prevent tragedies like Jakub’s is a register of sex offenders:

“We should have in the European Union a full register of sex offenders and police need to have access to the data. Maybe that would help. But as far as I know the Slovak police did not tell our own police that this man was punished for paedophilia in the past.”

Jerry Morris - Repeat Sex Offender - Strikes Again

Porter County Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper said of everything she has seen during her years on the bench, she's always amazed by parents who knowingly leave their children vulnerable to sex offenders.

This was the case with Portage resident Jerry Morris, whom Harper sentenced Tuesday to the near-maximum 12 years behind bars for repeatedly fondling a 6-year-old girl just a short time after being released from prison from one of his two earlier molestation convictions.

Morris also pleaded guilty to violating his probation from those earlier offenses by drinking alcohol, looking at pornography on the Internet and failing to pay his fees.

Morris, who can be released in about five years with good behavior and as a result of time already served, was ordered to undergo sex offender treatment while in prison.

The most recent molestations occurred between March 2 and Aug. 10, 2007, and involved the daughter of a friend staying temporarily at Morris' mobile home at 70 B Cod Drive.

The girl told police she spent a few weekends with her father and Morris, and was left alone on occasion with Morris. She said Morris would tickle her but denied he fondled her.

Morris admitted to fondling the girl during an interview that was part of a sexual history polygraph examination that is a requirement stemming from his earlier molestation convictions. He said he tickled her on numerous occasions and fondled her as many as five times.

The 29-year-old apologized Tuesday, asked for forgiveness and said he has the support of his family if he were allowed to go free.

Deputy Prosecutor Cheryl Polarek gave Morris credit for admitting the crime, but said he has proven himself a poor candidate to be released on probation.

Harper said she did not know if officials with the Indiana Department of Child Services were involved in the case, but criticized the parent responsible for leaving the child with Morris.

Billy Dan Carroll - Child Molester must pay for own attorney

"All he did was hurt,
I mean he is one of the most evil men I know"

An Austin judge ruled a man accused of molesting at least six children must find a way to pay for his own attorney.

Billy Dan Carroll appeared in court Wednesday wearing a jailhouse jumper with his feet shackled in chains. He asked Judge Melissa Goodwin for a court appointed attorney because Carroll says his wife froze their assets and his business partner dissolved their partnership.

But the state argued weeks ago Carroll was making $200,000 a year, with a $400,000 house and $70,000 in personal property.

The judge ordered Carroll to turn over revenue records showing his assets, but that didn't happen. So Wednesday she ruled he must make some effort to sell property to hire an attorney.

"Mr. Carroll is a very wealthy man. He lived an extravagant lifestyle. He traveled all over the world. He owned his business. He lived in an expensive house," Travis County Asst. District Attorney Dayna Blazey said.

That's pleases Kim Krueger, who says Carroll abused her starting back in 1981.

"I’ve been to Mr. Carroll's home. I know his lifestyle. My mom dated him; they've remained friends up and through the 90's even with his current wife, and he's still talked to my mother. I know he lives a very extravagant life, and to simply say that's he's in jail is no reason he can't access his funds is absurd,” Krueger said.

"All he did was hurt, I mean he is one of the most evil men I know, and I guess for me it's gratifying. I feel justice has been done because for 27 years I prayed every night for something to happen, and it did," she continued.

Through his attorney, Carroll says he understands the judges ruling but isn’t thrilled with it. Carroll says his money needs to go to his wife and daughters. Carroll’s lawyer for the hearing says hiring a private attorney could cost Carroll about a $100,000.

The state says it will present the cases of abuse to a grand jury in about 30 or 40 days.

Daveon Lee Jackson - Repeat Sex Offender

A registered sex offender has been arrested and charged with raping a 15-year-old Lexington girl as she slept in her home.

Daveon Lee Jackson, 26, has been charged with first-degree rape for attacking the girl in her own bedroom. Police say the incident happened last week at the girl's home on Niagara Drive in Lexington. Police found out about the alleged attack when the girl's mother, who was an acquaintance of Jackson's who was helping him out, took her to UK Hospital.

"(The mother) was trying to help somebody out who was in a difficult situation and he took advantage of her generosity and this thing occurred," said Sgt. Jesse Harris of Lexington Police. "I'm sure she had no idea this was going to happen."

Jackson was convicted in 2004 and served time for raping another 15-year-old girl, which landed him on the sex offender registry.

If convicted in the latest incident, Jackson could face anywhere from 20 years to life in prison and a lifetime listing on the sex offender registry.

A man charged with molesting the son of a couple who befriended him after his release from prison was returned Friday from Mexico to New Hampshire.

Jon Savarino Schillaci, who was listed on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, was captured Thursday morning in the town of San Jose Gracia near Guadalajara, the FBI said.

Schillaci is believed to have lived in Guadalajara from 2003 to 2006, using the name Dylan Natchitoches Pierce. FBI agents say he was the Web master of a pedophile Internet site and used the name Dylan Thomas to host "The Dylan Thomas Show," a Web-based broadcast program featuring chat for men attracted to boys.

After serving a prison sentence in Texas for molesting boys, Schillaci moved to Boston and then into the home of a Deerfield, N.H., couple who had written to him while he was in prison. The couple wanted Schillaci to have a chance to make a new life for himself, but he allegedly molested their 5-year-old son within weeks of his arrival.

Schillaci also faces charges of possession of child pornography.

Eugene Murphy - The Door-to-Door Child Molester

Coweta County officials have charged a suspected child molester they say went door to door in search of young victims. But when Eugene Murphy, 20, knocked on the door of an officer who investigates sex crimes, she made sure authorities knew what he was up to.

Authorities said Murphy had an intense desire to harm children. Murphy was knocking on doors wearing running shorts, a tank top and no shoes, according to officials. An off-duty officer told police she knew something wasn’t right and jumped into action.

Neighbors told Channel 2 they are angry after hearing Coweta County investigators say Murphy brazenly went door to door in search of a child to harm.

A homeowner said she thinks Murphy saw the basketball goal in her yard and came to her door and asked if any kids were home. She said Murphy told her his uncle was having a party and he was looking for children to invite. It was the suspect’s unlucky day because the homeowner happened to be an Atlanta police officer who investigates sex crimes and she thought his behavior was suspicious. She followed Murphy and called deputies.

“At that time the suspect made statements that were alarming to the deputies about his intent and why he was looking for these children,” said Lt. John Lewis with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

Murphy was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to entice a child for indecent purposes. After further investigation, authorities said they found another victim and Murphy was charged with kidnapping and attempted child molestation.

Investigators said they continue to talk to potential victims. Murphy had a court appearance and was denied bond.

Ignacio Vargas - Convicted Child Molester Sentenced to 588 years

Ignacio Vargas showed little emotion as Judge Carol Ash added up the maximum sentences for each of the 37 counts against him and then announced the total.

Judge Carol Ash: "88 years plus 500 years to life."

A jury convicted Vargas last month for repeatedly molesting a young girl who saw him as a father-figure. The sexual abuse started in 2005 when she was just eight years old and continued until 2007 when a sheriff's deputy caught them together in a car. In court on Thursday, a victim's advocate read a letter from the girl's mother.

It said, "He robbed her innocence, her childhood, and the trauma that she will take during her whole life. He destroyed her life, and after she testified, she remains traumatized."

Deputy District Attorney David Sandhaus says that's why Vargas deserved the stiffest possible penalty.

David Sandhaus: "By sentencing this defendant to 588 years in prison, it guarantees this specific person will never molest a child again and hopefully other people who might contemplate such an action will think twice before they do it."

The sentence is the longest anyone has ever received in Merced County. That's partly because the state passed a law in 2006 that requires a prison term of 25 years to life each time someone rapes a child.

Sandhaus: "The punishment is proportional to what the people of California said they want for raping a victim. The other thing about getting a really high sentence like this, it guarantees he'll never get out."

Defense attorney Caleb Hegland says his client is innocent and he plans to appeal the conviction. But for now, Vargas is facing an unprecedented prison term for what the prosecution describes as an unimaginable crime.

Operation Centurian - Child Porn Web Broken

Charged … Alan Lilburne Melchert,
a coach of junior soccer and hockey teams.

DOZENS of men have been arrested for child pornography and abuse offences - including community leaders, a police officer, a teacher and a youth worker - after the nation's biggest anti-pedophile investigation.

The six-month joint operation by the Australian Federal Police and state police forces uncovered several cases of child molestation and highlighted the astonishing way in which pedophiles form secret communities in cyberspace and use the global reach of the internet to trade child exploitation images.

To date, 70 arrests have been made across Australia. A further 20 people have been issued with summonses to appear in court where they will be charged with possessing child exploitation material. More arrests are expected in coming weeks and months.

Dubbed Operation Centurion, the investigation was triggered after a hacker infiltrated a respectable European website and inserted 99 degrading and explicit images of young girls from eastern Europe, the US and Paraguay.

The site - which cannot be named for legal reasons - was besieged by an incredible 12 million hits in just 76 hours after word got around online pedophile networks that the images were available and the website's address was circulated.

Almost 150,000 different computer users from 170 countries accessed the otherwise obscure website, including Australians using 2883 computer IP addresses. Of those, 1513 had downloaded one or more images in the 76-hour period.

Police were able to match IP addresses to locations. Some were public computers in places such as libraries, some were duplicates, but many could be traced to homes.

Those arrested have ranged in age from 19 to 81 and included individuals with a known history of child abuse, and others with unblemished backgrounds.
