John Harold Medeiros - Repeat Sex Offender - Stalking Children

CHICO — Police said a registered sex offender who lives near Rio Lindo Avenue has twice allegedly jumped out of bushes on a bike path to scare the same 12 year-old girl, who attends a nearby charter school.

Police said an investigation into the incidents has focused on John Harold Medeiros, 44.

Detective Terry Moore said the CORE Butte Charter School has e-mailed parents of its 400 students to warn that Medeiros lives nearby, and has been seen on what police consider to be school grounds.

Moore said Medeiros' original conviction as a sex offender does not require him to live at least 2,000 feet from a school or playground.
He said the man has a long, violent criminal history which includes convictions for molesting a child, sexually assaulting an adult, forgery and failing to register as a sex offender.

Medeiros is currently in compliance with his sex offender registration requirements, but Moore said police fear he may escalate his activities involving children.

Police have unconfirmed reports Medeiros has been seen near the school staring at children and in some cases motioning them to come to him.
Moore said police have contacted the man and warned him to stop annoying children.

Moore said police can't prove Medeiros has broken any laws, including the terms of his parole. He isn't currently wanted.

"What we're hoping will happen is parents will tell their children not to ride or walk on the bike path anymore," Moore said.

He noted property managers for the apartment where Medeiros lives are getting some heat, and it's possible the man will be relocating soon.

Moore said Medeiros is the first sex offender the department has named who has not been arrested or charged with a specific crime.

"Once we know a sex offender is acting out, it's our job under the law to warn and protect the public," Moore said.

Donald Mathias - Indicted in Florida for Traveling to the Philippines for Sex Tourism

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Donald Mathias, 64, has been indicted for allegedly traveling to the Philippines in 2007 and 2008 to engage in sexual conduct with minors, announced Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division Lanny A. Breuer and Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jeffrey H. Sloman.

Mathias, whose last known residence is in the Southern District of Florida, was arraigned today before Magistrate Judge Barry S. Seltzer in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Mathias was charged in an indictment filed on Oct. 27, 2009, with one count of conspiring to engage in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place and traveling in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct; six counts of offering to buy a child in order to depict the child in child pornography; six counts of coercion and enticement of a minor to engage
in sexual activity; three counts of traveling in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct; and four counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place.

Mathias allegedly arranged with the mother of two minor females in the Philippines to travel to the Philippines in April 2007 and December 2007 to engage in sexual conduct with the minors and did so. Mathias also allegedly arranged to travel again to the Philippines in December 2008 to engage in sexual conduct with the minors. However, Philippine authorities received
information about the arrangements and rescued the children before they met Mathias again.

If convicted, Mathias faces up to life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Charges in an indictment are merely accusations and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Phillip T. Young - Repeat Sex Offender - Hired as Mentor to boys - Charged with molestation

A registered sex offender who managed to get hired as a family caseworker and expand his role to mentoring young boys several years ago is now charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Buffalo boy, authorities said Tuesday.
Police said Phillip T. Young, despite becoming a registered sex offender in 1995, was hired in 2000 by the Buffalo Urban League to help work with families experiencing difficult times. The hiring raises questions about why his background was not thoroughly vetted.

In 2006, Young, 44, was arrested for making sexual overtures to a youth whom he took to his home, according to police. As a result, he spent a year in jail.
That incident cost him his job at the Urban League. But when Young was set free, police said, he managed to re-establish contact with a child in one of the families he had previously mentored.
After doing so, he sexually molested the 13-year-old boy last summer as the child slept in his family’s home, police said. In addition, police said, Young was also mentoring some of the boy’s brothers, though he was no longer associated with the Urban League.

“He was telling people after he was released that he was in jail for failing to pay child support,” said a law enforcement official familiar with the case in explaining how Young was able to reconnect with families he’d met while mentoring.
Young, who lists his occupation as a social worker, was arrested Sunday after the boy told relatives what had happened last August. Charges against Young, of Sumner Place, include sexual abuse, committing a criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child.

Outraged that Young was ever given the chance to have contact with young boys given his sex offender status, authorities said the Urban League had an obligation to check the state’s online sex offender registry before ever hiring him.

“You would hope that practices are in place to minimize mistakes like that from happening again,” said Deputy Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda.

“All mentoring programs, at a very minimal, should do a record check. All they have to do is put the name into the registry to see if they are sex offenders. That information is open to everybody,” the other law enforcement official said. “They definitely need to check these people out before they send them into people’s homes.”
If the Urban League had checked the registry before hiring Young, critics say, he would never would have gotten the opportunity to establish a relationship with his latest victim.
Brenda McDuffie, president of the Urban League, said that background checks are conducted on all prospective workers before her organization decides whether to hire them, but that Young was brought in from another agency when it closed.

“Unfortunately when he was first hired, we agreed to take staff from another organization that was closing, My Brother’s Keeper, and he was one of the staff we took,” McDuffie said. “He was one of the people who unfortunately slipped through the cracks.”

When the Urban League learned of his 2006 arrest, McDuffie said, Young was immediately fired and the Erie County Social Services Department was contacted “so that they could notify all the families he had contact with, and we were under the understanding that they notified all the families.”

She added that Young was not an official mentor.

“He was a family caseworker, working with the family through a parent and every parent is told that our staff is never allowed to take their children without their supervision,” said McDuffie, stressing that Young’s crimes were not taken lightly. “It’s the worst thing to have our children put in jeopardy.”

In addition to doing background checks on potential new hires, McDuffie said her workers are now reviewed annually to make sure they are in good standing and to safeguard clients.

Young is a Level 2 sex offender. Those individuals are considered at risk of possibly reoffending, while individuals rated at Level 3, the highest level, are viewed as the most likely to reoffend.

Derenda added that parents are the first line of defense for their children.

“It is incumbent upon parents to know who their children are associating with,” he said.

Young, who is being held without bail in the Erie County Holding Center, is scheduled to appear in Buffalo City Court at 9:30 a. m. Thursday for a felony hearing.

In the 2006 incident, Young asked a 15-year-old boy he was mentoring if he could show him a pornographic movie, according to police. He also asked the boy if he would perform oral sex for $1,000. The youth refused.

Young became a registered sex offender in 1995 on a sodomy conviction stemming from an arrest at Buffalo State College.

Terrence J. Lee - Repeat Sex Offender - Accused of drugging, sexually battering teen

Daytona Beach police has arrested a registered sex offender on charges that he sexually battered a 15-year-old who they say may have been drugged.

Terrence J. Lee, 37, who lives on Hollywood Avenue in Daytona Beach, also faces a charge of violation of probation after his arrest today, Daytona Beach police Investigator Jimmie Flynt said.

The incident occurred in August.

The victim and a friend were invited to Lee's home to watch a movie, Flynt said. Lee gave the 15-year-old boy an alcoholic drink and the victim's friend told police he saw Lee put a white powdery substance in the drink that he thought was sugar, Flynt said.

The friend told police he went to the bathroom and when he returned the victim had passed out and Lee was rubbing the boy's leg near the groin area, Flynt said.

The friend woke the victim and the two started to leave, but Lee offered them a ride home. The friend was taken home first and the victim passed out in the car, Flynt said. When he awakened, Lee was performing a sex act on him, Flynt said.

Investigators believe there may be other victims, Flynt said.

Anyone with information can call Detective Elaine Golsen at 386-671-5205.

Scottish Paedophile gang leaders sentenced to life

The two ringleaders of Scotland’s biggest paedophile gang have been given life sentences for a horrifying string of child pornography and abuse crimes, which included a sexual assault on a three-month old baby.

Convicted sex offender Neil Strachan will serve a minimum of 16 years and gay rights campaigner James Rennie a minimum of 13.

Both will be subject to a life-long restriction order.

The judge said Strachan had a "sadistic and aggressive personality" and breached a family’s trust to satisfy his "base sexual interests".

STRACHAN

He described Rennie as a "spider" at the centre of the conspiracy, "weaving an electronic web" in order to distribute child pornography over the internet.

RENNIE
HIV-positive Strachan, 41, a Repeat Sex Offender, was found guilty of attempting to rape an 18-month-old boy and sexually assaulting a six-year-old boy at a trial earlier this year.
Rennie, 38, the ex-boss of LGBT Youth Scotland, an organisation dedicated to helping young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, was convicted of molesting a young boy over more than four years, beginning when the child was aged just three months.

The pair, both from Edinburgh, were also convicted of a string of child porn charges, alongside six other men who have already been sentenced.

They were further found guilty of conspiring to abuse children, as were three other members of the network, after a 10-week trial.

In his closing statement, Lord Bannantyne said: "These types of offences are serious in that they maintain the market for paedophilic pornographic material. If there were fewer people willing to download such material, either for their own use or with the intention of distributing, the encouragement for those who manufacture these photographs, with all the clearly serious effects such manufacture must have on children, would be lessened."

The men were snared by one of the most complex and challenging inquiries carried out by Scots police.

They were traced through their explicit internet chats about sexual fantasies involving children.
In total, nearly 125,000 indecent images were seized during Operation Algebra.

Strachan, despite being one of the worst offenders in the group, was the only one of the eight men on trial this year who denied every charge against him.

Prosecutors were forced to piece together the case against him bit by bit.

Crucial to their case was a photograph partially showing a man sexually assaulting a young child.
The Crown called on a world-renowned expert in human anatomy to examine the picture, known in court as The Hogmanay Image.
In his statement, Lord Bannantyne said: "By its very nature what is shown in that photograph is utterly appalling and would shock to the core any right-minded person who has had to see it.

"Over and above that this offence involves the most gross level of breach of trust. You were invited into a house; treated as a friend of the family; and then entrusted with their child.

"You then breached that trust in the way shown in the "Hogmanay Image" in order to satisfy your base sexual interests. This in my judgment can be properly described as a dreadful crime."
Rennie, 38, was the successful chief executive of LGBT Youth Scotland, where he was a confidante to teenagers and a champion of gay rights.
He was convicted of betraying his close friends, who allowed him to babysit their young child. But Rennie began abusing the child when it was only three months old.
After police uncovered the crimes, they visited the family’s home in Edinburgh to show them photos and a video clip that Rennie had taken .The family then had to send their child to be tested for HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.
The judge said: "The level of betrayal, it seems to me, is truly appalling in its extent. These people had always stood by you; they had been there for you; given you their friendship; brought you into their lives and into the lives of their child (you were made their child’s godfather) and entrusted their child to you to look after. What did you do? You wholly betrayed that friendship and breached their trust in the grossest manner.
Paint firm engineer Strachan, 41, sparked Operation Algebra when he left indecent images of children on a computer he sent for repair.

Tests then revealed "sinister" emails between him and Rennie.

They had encountered each other online in 2004 when Strachan congratulated Rennie on the content of his web page on a site known to have been used by paedophiles.
When the case came to trial, the jury did not know was that Strachan had offended before. He was jailed for three years in 1997 for repeatedly molesting a young boy while he was an official at a youth football club. He started abusing the child when he was five years old and the abuse went on for two years.
Strachan quit his post as secretary of Celtic East Boys Club in Edinburgh after he was caught.

When he was jailed, it emerged that he had also been convicted of a similar sex offence 12 years previously.

  • Conviction Date: 12/13/1989 Age at conviction: 40 -- CRIMINAL CONFINEMENT, IF THE VICTIM IS LESS THAN 18
  • Conviction Date: 11/2/1990 Age at conviction: 41 -- SEXUAL BATTERY

A Westfield man already in jail in Tipton County since May on a felony sexual battery charge involving an 11-year-old girl is now facing 15 felony charges relating to images of children police found on his computer.

But it gets worse. Richard E. Dell, 58, Westfield, already was a convicted sex offender on parole before his May arrest.

Dell has been jailed in Tipton County since May 20 on the sexual battery charge stemming from an incident that month. Dell was in Tipton when the sexual battery incident occurred, said Indiana State Police Master Trooper Detective Tony Frawley.

Dell was arrested in Westfield and transported back to Tipton County Jail.

Police searched his computer, Frawley said, and found enough child pornography to file another 15 felony charges. He will be prosecuted in Hamilton County on those charges.

Edward Oberwise - MySpace Predator - Gets 20 years

When arrested he was wearing a shirt that read "Real Men of Genius."

A convicted sex offender got an earful from a judge for his apparent lack of remorse before being sentenced Wednesday.

Edward Oberwise, 40, of Seminole, was sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of sexual offender probation.

According to prosecutors, Oberwise met a 12-year-old girl on MySpace and invited her to meet him.

The 12-year-old and her 14-year-old friend snuck out of their Lithia home in the middle of the night in January of 2008.

Oberwise drove them to a nearby parking lot where they had a sexual encounter. But when he returned to meet them again a few days later deputies were waiting instead. The arrest was captured on video.

Oberwise was arrested and later convicted of the crimes.

After some prodding from the judge, Oberwise apologized in court.

"I just need to say to the court how sorry I am, you know, I mean, that's basically it," Oberwise said. "Look, I've got a family. I've got a kid. I've got a job. My employer's here."
"You know what sir? You might have thought about that before you tried to pull this off," said Judge Wayne Timmerman. "You went there prowling. Looking for something. Predator is the word Mr. Duran uses. And it's really not misplaced in this case. And you got what you wanted. The problem is you got caught. I think you're sorry. But I think you're sorry you got caught."
The mother of one of the victims made a statement on behalf of her daughter.

"What I witnessed that night is something I will never forget. And the memory will stay with me for the rest of my life. I had just turned 14 years old and had never been exposed to anything like that in my life," she read. "Still to this day I had nightmares about what happened."

Timmerman said he was tempted to give Oberwise the maximum sentence of 75 years in prison, but instead stuck with the sentence the attorneys agreed upon.

Crystal Anne Rodriguez - Repeat Sex Offender - Charged along with husband Jose Luis

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office has arrested the husband of a convicted sex offender charged last week with statutory rape.

Jose Luis Rodriguez, 27, of Lone Star Court, Cameron, was charged with one count each of statutory rape, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and conspiracy, all felonies.

His wife, Crystal Anne Rodriguez, 28, of the same address, faces two charges of statutory rape and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with the same alleged crime.

Mrs. Rodriguez is a convicted sex offender who pleaded guilty in early 2008 to having sex with a 14-year-old boy and fondling his 13-year-old brother in 2006.

Harnett County investigators say the latest charges came after they discovered the couple had sex with a 15-year-old boy. The arrest report said family members brought the allegations to the attention of investigators.
"He'd (the juvenile) been living in the home for quite a while, originally came from California and his mother allowed him to stay with the (Rodriguez) family," Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins said. "The bottom line is they were having threesomes." Sheriff Rollins said his officeis also investigating allegations of underage drinking and marijuana use at the Rodriguez home involving other minors.
Mrs. Rodriguez pleaded guilty in January 2008 to two counts of sexual battery in connection with her first arrest, in which she also reportedly gave the teens alcohol. The crimes were discovered when the boys parents discovered inappropriate computer messages.

She was sentenced to serve two years probation, ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, have no contact with anyone under the age of 16 other than her own two children and ordered to register as a sex offender.

Sheriff Rollins said there was no indication the young Rodriguez children had ever been molested. He said probation and parole has revoked Mrs. Rodriguez's probation.

Mr. Rodriguez, who was in the military at the time of his wife's first arrest, according to news reports from the time, has never been indicated as having any involvement in his wife's earlier episode.

Mr. Rodriguez is held under $50,000 bond, Mrs. Rodriguez under $100,000 bond.

Sheriff Rollins asked anyone with information concerning underage drinking, marijuana use or other illegal activities at the Rodriguez home to call the sheriff's office at 893-9111.

Dwayne Dale Billings - Repeat Sex Offender - First as a Juvenile, Now as an Adult

Conviction Date: 8/13/1998
Age at conviction: 13
Victim's Age: 4

A convicted sex offender accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an autistic girl in Odessa is competent to face a jury.

An Ector County Judge made that ruling on Monday for 24-year-old Dwayne Dale Billings.

The kidnapping happened back in 2007.

Last year, Billings was found incompetent and was sent to a state hospital to undergo treatment.

Billings' attorney wants a change of venue, because of all the media coverage surrounding the case, and hopes to begin the trial this winter.

It all began back in January 2007 when authorities and volunteers launched a massive 11-½ hour search for the girl, who was later found to be in a West Odessa home with billings.

They found the girl after a tip from Billing's grandfather, who saw coverage of the search on the news and called authorities.

Michael E. Washington - Repeat Sex Offender - Searching for victims at arcade

A sex offender convicted more than 20 years ago of raping a 12-year-old girl pleaded guilty to violating the state's sex-offender registry laws by being within 300 feet of children at an arcade at Hanes Mall.

Michael E. Washington, 46, of Greensboro entered an Alford plea yesterday in Forsyth Superior Court to a charge of being a sex offender on child premises. An Alford plea allows a defendant to plead guilty but not acknowledge any wrongdoing.

Washington was accused of being in the arcade, which is in the back of the food court at Hanes Mall, Assistant District Attorney Jim O'Neill said yesterday. The arcade is called the "Kids Zone."
Several people complained to mall security on Feb. 21 that they saw Washington walking around in the arcade, talking on his cell phone and taking pictures with his cell phone. He was there for several hours, he said.
Mall security was able to get Washington's plate number when he left the mall and turned the information over to the Winston-Salem Police Department. Police checked his criminal record and found he was a registered sex offender. Washington was charged when he came back to the mall several days later, O'Neill said.

Last year, state legislators toughened the laws on sex offenders, saying they had to stay at least 300 feet from places where children regularly gather.
Washington was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl in Georgia in 1983 and was required to register as a sex offender. Last year, he was accused of masturbating in front of teenage girls at the central library in Greensboro. He was convicted of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
"When you look at his pattern, it's unnerving that this guy is walking around out here, and in the state's opinion, this guy is a predator," O'Neill said yesterday.

Judge Michael Helms sentenced Washington to 8 to 10 months in prison, but Washington has served most of that time while awaiting trial. After the hearing, O'Neill said that state legislators need to increase the penalties for these kinds of violations.

Travis Simpson, Washington's attorney, said his client thought he was only banned from parks, day-care centers, schools and playgrounds. He did not intend to break the law, he said.

"No one told him that he can't go to the food court or the arcade," Simpson said.

Scott Brewer - Repeat Sex Offender - Admits he's a Monster

A Great Falls man previously convicted for sexual assault was charged Thursday with sex crimes on two separate victims

Scott Brewer, 42, made his initial appearance in Cascade County District Court on felony counts of sexual assault and another sexual offense.
Brewer is accused of touching a nine-year-old girl and making her touch his penis in June, court documents state. He denied the accusations when interviewed by police, but told them he is sexually attracted to children, according to court documents. He told police he is a "monster," court documents state.
Investigators also found another victim who said Brewer sexually assaulted him when he was about 12-years-old. The victim is 26 now, court documents state. The man said the assaults took place shortly after Brewer was released from prison for his previous sexual assault conviction.
The state sexual and violent offender registry shows that Brewer was sentenced for a sexual assault in Montana in January 1989.
Brewer was being held in the Cascade County Regional Detention Center on Thursday on $75,000 bond on the sexual offense counts, along with a $25,000 bond on a count of failing to register his address in the sexual and violent offender registry.

He faces up to life in prison on each of the sex crime counts.

Robert L. DeHaan - Repeat Sex Offender - Pleads Guilty

Hours before he was likely to face a jury on allegations that he sexually assaulted an employee, a West Seattle contractor -- and registered sex offender -- opted to fold.
Robert Dehaan, 62, pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempted rape and assault with a sexual motivation, admitting to attempting to force himself upon a male employee on Sept. 1, 2008, a King County Prosecutor's Office spokesman said. At the time of the assault, Dehaan was already facing charges on allegations that he had inappropriate contact with three teenage boys. Dehaan previously pleaded guilty in that case.
According to court filings, an adult employee at Dehaan's firm, Alpine Construction, called Seattle police on Sept. 2, 2008, to report Dehaan's unwanted advances.

The man told police Dehaan had offered him a project manager's position with the firm two months before the assault, offering him a $100,000 annual salary as well as a food and housing stipend while working in Hawaii. Dehaan, the man told officers, said he only needed to meet to sign an employment packet.

"(The man) felt that this was an incredible opportunity for him and felt that his wife and children would be well taken care of," Detective Maria S. Ditusa said in court documents. "He thought that it was an offer of a lifetime."

Arriving at Dehaan's home office the evening of Sept. 1, the man said Dehaan instead offered him "a salary to be his sexual companion while traveling."

The man refused Dehaan's offer and turned to leave when Dehaan grabbed him from behind, according to police. The contractor then threw his intended victim on a table and attempted to sexually assault him; the man was able to throw a drink in Dehaan's face and escape.

In interviews with detectives, the man said he suspected Dehaan may have spiked the soda pop he'd served his intended victim. The man said he could not recall the four hours after the assault.

The day after the assault, the man said he received a threatening phone call from Dehaan. His would-be employer, the man said, threatened to shoot him if he called the police.

In court documents, Ditusa noted that the attack matched with other incidents in which Dehaan has been accused in which he offered to pay for sex.

"He committed this crime in the same manner of which he has attempted and committed many other incidents of sexual misconduct," the detective told the court. "He groomed (the victim) with the promise of a lucrative career to gain his trust and then attempted to gain sexual compliance from him."

At the time of the incident, Dehaan was facing charges on allegations that he attempted to discuss or solicit sex from three teen employees and had been freed from King County Jail after posting $100,000 bail.
According to court documents in that case, Dehaan -- who previously was convicted of statutory rape and, on separate occasions, two counts of immoral communication with a minor -- approached the four boys separately. In two instances, Dehaan was accused of offering the juveniles money for sexual contact.
Dehaan pleaded guilty to one count of communication with a minor for immoral purposes in that case and was sentenced to a four-year prison term.

Dehaan pleaded guilty Tuesday to third-degree attempted rape and third-degree assault with sexual motivation. King County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Dan Donohoe said prosecutors will ask that Dehaan receive a five-year sentence.

Sex Offender used FaceBook to find his murder victim

The 32-year-old man has been arrested after he led detectives to a field where they found the body of Ashleigh Hall, 17, in Sedgefield, County Durham, after allegedly telling them “I killed a girl”.
Ashleigh had left her home in Darlington where she lived with her four sisters on Sunday night, telling her mother she was staying with a friend.
But the childcare student had secretly arranged to meet a man she had been chatting with on Facebook near a Little Chef restaurant on a road known locally as “lover’s lane”. She had told friends it was a 16-year-old boy.
On Monday lunchtime when Ashleigh had not returned home, her mother, Andrea Hall, 39, became concerned and frantically called her daughter’s mobile phone to find out where she was, but could not get a reply.

The 32-year-old suspect was picked up by patrol officers later on Monday afternoon after automatic numberplate recognition cameras had detected he was driving without insurance.
While he was waiting in a police cell in Middlesbrough, he asked to speak to a detective, saying “I have killed a girl”, sources said.

It is believed that when the teenager got into the suspect’s car, a dark blue Ford Mondeo, he used gaffer tape to gag her.

He has told police that she “accidentally” suffocated, and he then dumped the body, according to sources.
He led police to where her body was dumped, close to the junction of the A689 and A177 roads.
Police chiefs and child safety experts have issued a warning about the dangers of using the internet to date strangers as it emerged the victim had met the suspect on a social networking website.
Danny Fisher, 17, a student from Darlington, a friend of Ashleigh, said: “I heard that she had been talking with a man on Facebook. He told her was 16, but obviously it looks like that was a lie.”

At a press conference, Det Chief Insp Paul Harker said it was a “very tragic case” and added: “My message in terms of meeting people from the internet is please do not do it unless you are absolutely certain it is safe.”

He urged parents to monitor their children’s use of the web.

“Speak to them about it, speak to their friends, let them know the dangers of the internet,” he said.LMK ends
The message was backed by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, which receives 500 reports a week about suspect behaviour and advises parents to stay in touch with how their children use the net.

A spokesman said: “We realise this may be difficult, because teenagers may resent their privacy being disturbed, but it is not a question of intruding, it is just important to know where they are going online.”
An NSPCC spokesman urged children to speak out if they felt concerns about someone’s behaviour online.

“It is not a good idea to arrange to meet people that you have chatted to online, as you can never be sure they are who they say they are,” he said.

The victim’s family was too upset to talk last night at their home in Warwick Square, Darlington, but friends of the teenager, who was studying at Darlington College, paid tribute to a “bubbly” girl who was “always smiling”.

James Hyde, 18, from Darlington, said: “She has four little sisters and she was always looking out for them. She loved them.”

Elisha Currie, 17, a nursery assistant from Darlington, said: “I did a work placement with Ashleigh at a nursery for about four months over the summer.

“She was a really bubbly person. She was always really helpful and great with the children.

“All the girls that knew her at the nursery said she was a great girl and had a great personality.”
Officers said that the suspect originally gave two different names for himself, but they have now established his identity and that he has a conviction for a sex offence. Officers are tracing his previous crimes and believe that he may have flouted the rules of the sex offenders’ register by moving address without notifying police.
Ashleigh’s body was fully clothed when it was found and there was no indication the girl had been sexually assaulted, police confirmed.

Scott Wright, 28, who lives on the lane where it the body was discovered said that he saw police inspecting a ditch while a man was apparently handcuffed in the back of a car.

“He had fair hair which was shaved and he was staring at the spot where the body was,” he said.

Peter Martin, a farmer whose land it was on, said: “This is a deserted road most of the time but we do get people using it as a lovers’ lane because it is so quiet.”

A post-mortem was being carried out on Ashleigh’s body yesterday.

Andrew E. Sarber - Repeat Sex Offender - Raped woman for looking him up on the Registry

A registered sex offender has been charged with three felony counts of second-degree sexual assault as a repeat offender.

Andrew E. Sarber, 28, 930 A Michigan Ave., faces up to 75 years in prison and $300,000 in fines if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint:
Sarber became enraged when a woman he knows — who considered him a friend — looked up his criminal history and confronted him with his status as a registered sex offender.

He pushed her down and held her wrists with one hand while removing her clothes with the other, and then sexually assaulted her on Oct. 22.
When the woman called him later, he acknowledged what he did and apologized for his conduct.
Sarber was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in August of 2002 and was sentenced to one to six months in jail followed by five years of extended supervision. He was then sentenced to 11 more months in prison in January of 2004 and to another three years in prison in December of 2007.

Kenneth Kellam - Repeat Sex Offender - Tried to lure more boys

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A convicted sex offender is in the Dougherty County jail accused of trying to pick up two boys as they walked home from school Monday afternoon.
36-year old Kenneth Kellam is charged with two counts of attempting to entice a child for indecent purposes, two counts of attempted child molestation, and one count of failing to register as a sex offender. School Police picked up Kellam near Northside Elementary on 14th Avenue as a mother confronted him for approaching her sons.
"It's real concerning people choose children as targets," R. D. Harter of the DCSS. "We despise that for obvious reasons and want to keep our children safe and I'm thrilled we have a police department that can get on top of things as quickly as we can and stop this particular situation."

Police say Kellam tried to convince the boys to get into his white van last week, and they believe that's what he was going to do again Monday. Police impounded that van as part of their investigation.
In 2003, Kellam was convicted in Tampa, Florida of false imprisonment of a child for trying to force two 13-year old boys into a van.

Michael Jack Miller - Repeat Sex Offender - BUSTED

A Pickens man faces a number of charges including sexual exploitation of a minor and assault, after police responded to an alleged fight on Oct. 8.

According to a press release from the Pickens Police Department, Michael Jack Miller, 49, was placed under arrest on the scene, accused of assaulting two women.

While at the home, police said they saw evidence of illegal drugs and child pornography, which they seized.
After getting a search warrant, police said they also seized a computer and several boxes with photos and videos pertaining to child pornography.
The computer was sent to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division for further analysis, according to police.

After further investigation, police say they found a victim who lives outside the department’s jurisdiction, so they notified the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

On Oct. 12, officers executed a search warrant on Miller’s cell phone. According to an arrest warrant, they found pictures and video of child pornography, with some images showing a minor female.
On the day of his arrest, police accused Miller of striking a 74-year-old woman “using a closed fist hitting her about the head and shoulder area while yelling profanity at her about 10 or more times,” another arrest warrant states.
Miller faces one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, second degree; sexual exploitation of a minor, first degree, criminal domestic violence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to arrest warrants and tickets.

He is currently being held at the Pickens County Detention Center.

Prior to his arrest, Miller was already listed on the state’s sex offender registry, according to detention officials.
The registry Web site states that Miller is considered a sexual predator.

He was previously convicted of criminal sexual conduct with a minor, second degree in 1995.

The victim in that case was 11 years old, according to the registry.

82-Year-Old Mother Accused Of Witness Tampering

PALM COAST -- The 82-year-old mother of a man accused in a bizarre child porn and sex case was charged with witness tampering after the victim reported being threatened following a court hearing this week.
The victim, who was 15 at the time of the 2005 crime, testified in Monday's sentencing of Carla Rhea Maldonado, 41, to 5 1/2 years in prison. The former veterinary technician at Flagler Humane Society in September pleaded no contest to lewd and lascivious battery.

Maldonado's husband David, 43, is also charged with lewd and lascivious battery as well as 50 counts of possession of child pornography.
After Monday's sentencing hearing, the victim told investigators David Maldonado's mother, Miriam Maldonado, gave her hostile looks in the courtroom and at one point had to be physically restrained by two people she was with during the hearing, according to a news release by Flagler County sheriff's spokeswoman Debra Johnson.
The victim said she tried to walk quickly to her vehicle after the hearing, but she was followed by the 82-year-old and two others who shouted, "You better watch out," "If you're smart, you won't come back," and "It's your fault Carla and David are in jail," the release states.
The victim reported the incident to the State Attorney's Office and sheriff's investigators.

Miriam Maldonado, of Warren Place, turned herself in Friday evening at the Flagler County Inmate Facility and was released after posting $10,000 bail, Johnson said.

Flagler sheriff's investigators initially charged David and Carla Rhea Maldonado after a CD containing photos from the couple's home computer surfaced in November 2008.
Included were 16 images that investigators said David Maldonado took of Carla Maldonado molesting the victim, reports state. An additional 27 pictures taken over several months showed Carla Maldonado engaged in sex acts with her German shepherd, investigators said.
At the time of their arrest, two computers were seized from the Maldonados' home and taken to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office where they were analyzed. Carla Maldonado did not face charges in connection with having sex with the dog because bestiality is not against the law in Florida.

Jared Daniel Conway - Repeat Sex Offender - Kidnapped child of friend who tried to help him

Previous conviction: RAPE with force

Supporters of a 14-year-old-girl kidnapped by a family friend who intended to rape her seethed, swore and even muttered threats as they stared down the man found guilty of the crime.

Sex offender Jared Daniel Conway, 39, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison Monday in Stanislaus County Superior Court after pleading no contest to five felonies.
Conway looked back at the friends and family of the girl and asked to speak. He had been living with the girl's family for a month before the abduction, police said.

"I don't know why I can't control the impulses I have," Conway said. "I deserve to be locked away for good."

The 50-to-life sentence isn't the only time Conway may face. While in custody in Stanislaus County, Conway also admitted to murdering a girl in Tennessee in 2007, Deputy District Attorney Annette Rees wrote in a court brief. That case is pending.
Conway pleaded no contest last month in Stanislaus County to kidnap for the purpose of rape, assault to commit rape, false imprisonment, evading with injury, and hit and run with injury.

At 3 a.m. on July 5, 2008, the girl's father reported that she and Conway were missing from the family's north Modesto home.

Police found Conway's slipper in the girl's room. Her blanket was found outside the home along with a bracelet that looked as though it had been torn off, authorities said.

When Conway drove past the girl's home in the 2500 block of Garvey Avenue, officers who were there investigating the disappearance spotted his silver Honda Civic and gave chase.

About a mile from the house, Conway crashed into a Chevy truck, then ran.

The girl was found in the trunk of Conway's wrecked vehicle about three hours after she was reported missing.

Before the victim gave her statement Monday, she asked that video of the crime scene be shown.
In it, officers are shown having to cut off chunks of her hair to remove tape used as a blindfold. She had blackened eyes and cuts on her face.
"Every day, I think about it a little less," the girl said in court, sobbing.

She was flown to the University of California at Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment of injuries she sustained in the crash.

Steven Hughes - Pedophile Santa Claus busted for Child Pornography

A man who is a Santa Claus impersonator for hire faces child pornography charges in Delaware.

The New Castle County Police Department and the Delaware Child Predator Task Force say Steven Hughes, 52, of Newark, Del, is charged with 10 counts of using a computer to unlawfully depict children in a prohibited sexual act.
Police said Hughes is a former foster parent who has had more than 100 children placed in his home from 1983-1997

He runs Studio H Photography, an agency that specializes in the photography of young children. He is also a former Santa Claus who advertises as a person who will do home visits.
On October 21, detectives executed the search warrant at Hughes’ home and recovered evidence of hundreds of illegal images of children in various photographs.

Hughes was arrested at his second home. He was later transported to the New Castle County Police Department where he was interviewed and later charged with the aforementioned offenses.

Hughes has been arraigned and committed after failing to post $300,000 cash bail.

David Flavell - Repeat Sex Offender - STRIKES AGAIN

A notorious Level 3 sex offender with more than a dozen sex crime charges on his record was arrested after he tried to rape a woman at Massachusetts General Hospital yesterday, badly injuring her in the process, police said.

David Flavell, 40, who is homeless, is expected to be arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court for assault with intent to rape.
Police and sources said Flavell apparently followed a woman into a bathroom at the hospital and assaulted her. Police said the woman was injured but did not specify the nature of the injuries.
The scenario was chillingly familiar.

Flavell was charged with accosting a woman after cops said he followed her into a bookstore restroom in Braintree in 2008 and blocked the door with a bookcase, but fled when the woman screamed for help. Police said he had a backpack with a ski mask and duct tape. The disposition of that case was not available last night.
In 2006, Bristol County prosecutors tried to have Flavell declared a sexually dangerous person. But Judge Richard T. Moses disagreed and allowed him to go free.
Not long after, Flavell was charged by Boston cops with making lewd calls to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in which he allegedly claimed to have repeatedly molested a little girl in 2007. The case was dismissed when a key witness backed out.

With more than 12 years of police reports to go by, psychiatrists have described Flavell as an exhibitionist. He has been arrested several times for exposing himself and masturbating in public. In Salem, N.H., he was bagged in a Kmart, where he was accused of pleasuring himself with children’s clothes in 1996. He got a suspended sentence.

Johnnie J. Hobbs - Repeat Sex Offender - Commits Suicide

Manly man molests little children
Too cowardly to face justice
Good Riddance

TULSA, OK -- A man has died after setting himself on fire during a stand-off Thursday afternoon with Tulsa law enforcement officers.

The incident occurred in the 14100 block of East Apache.
According to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, a parole and probation deputy went to serve a felony arrest warrant to Johnnie J. Hobbs, a convicted child molester.
Hobbs barricaded himself inside a van at about 3 p.m.

"He poured some kind of flammable liquid in the floor of the van and set it on fire," said Chief Deputy Tim Albin, Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

The officers called in the Tulsa Fire Department, and the fire in the van burned out on its own, Albin said.

"We did a tactical approach to the van, got the doors opened and discovered the subject's body inside the van," he said.
Hobbs, 47, has several convictions for lewd molestaton, lewd or indecent proposals/acts with a child and showing obscene materials to a minor.

"I guess he didn't want to go back to prison," the chief deputy said.
Tulsa County Sheriff's Office deputies and Tulsa Police are still investigating at this time.

"We've never had anyone suicide-out by fire," Albin said. "This is unique.

Achilles Dartgnan Corelleone - MySpace Predator

A 47-year-old construction worker has been charged with sexually assaulting a boy he met on MySpace, police said Thursday.

Achilles Dartgnan Corelleone pleaded not guilty Thursday to three counts of oral copulation of a person under 16 and two counts of sodomy of a person under 16. The victim, 14, lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Covina.
“He was out there, trolling around on MySpace, and he met this victim,” said Covina police Sgt. Dave Foster. “We seized his laptop and cell phone and we feel very strongly that we’re going to find more evidence on there” of other victims.

Corelleone began corresponding with the boy in March on MySpace.com. A few days later, the pair had exchanged phone numbers and they began texting each other, Foster said. Soon they began meeting in person and Correlleone gained the boy’s trust by giving him presents like gift cards and jewelry. The sexual assault took place between June and early October, Foster said.
It ended when the boy’s father became suspicious of his son’s new friend who was known only by his first name. The father checked his son’s MySpace page and found correspondence between the two.

“He saw a guy who looked like an adult communicating with his son,” Foster said. “He was aware of what kind of vehicle (Corelleone) drove and happened to be driving down the street on Monday and saw the car at a park.”

The boy’s father called police, who detained Corelleone while they interviewed the boy and conducted an investigation. Corelleone was arrested a short time later. Detectives served a search warrant on his Palm Springs-area home the following day. An investigation is continuing into whether other boys may have been victimized. Anyone with information to call the Covina Police Department at 626-384-5808.

John Garman Shirk - Repeat Sex Offender - Tractor Molester

A convicted sex offender on Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law list has been accused of molesting four girls, ages 5-10, over a two-year-period.
John Garman Shirk, 61, of 25 Pine Ridge Lane, Center Township, told police he took two 5-year-old girls on a tractor ride in a field at 6 p.m. Sept. 27, during which he pulled up their dresses and fondled the girls as they took turns sitting on his lap.
Shirk allegedly told state police at Selinsgrove that he had fondled the girls in the same way on at least two previous occasions in the previous three weeks.

Shirk also told police he had similar contact with two girls who reside in Indiana, according to court documents. The victims, now ages 10 and 9, visited Shirk every summer for the past three years. The most recent visit occurred in July, when he took the girls for a ride on the tractor and put his hands on their clothing above their genitals while they sat on his lap.

Shirk said he did the same thing the two previous years they visited, in 2007 and 2008.

All incidents occurred between July 2007 and Sept. 27 of this year, at his home.

He is being held at Snyder County Jail on $750,000 bail. Shirk faces 10 counts each of indecent assault and corruption of minors, and another 10 counts of indecent assault.

Shirk is included on the Pennsylvania Megan’s Law Web site for a 1999 conviction for indecent assault case in Union County.

Rick Dietz - Repeat Sex Offender - College Campus Predator

The man arrested for allegedly stalking students in a dorm on the Nazareth College campus is a registered Level II sex offender--police say Rick Dietz had a history of crimes against women.

Campus police caught Rick Dietz showering in Kearney Hall on the Nazareth College campus last week.

Now police have confirmed that Dietz was also spotted allegedly watching a student shower in a dorm on campus three weeks earlier.

Students were disturbed to hear this news.

"I don't like feeling like I am not safe, and that made me feel that way,” said student Stacy Jackson.

Nazareth did send email alerts with Dietz's picture to students

What they didn't know is that Dietz is a registered Level II sex offender with a history of crimes against women. (Level III is considered to be the highest threat to society.)

State corrections officials confirmed that Dietz served 8 years in state prison for burglary, attempted sexual abuse and assault.
In June of 1992, Dietz attacked and injured a female jogger. On the same day, he broke into a woman's apartment, tied her to the dresser, sat on her chest, attempted to sexually abuse her and tried to smother her with a towel.

Dietz was paroled in June of 2000 after serving two thirds of his sentence, but was returned to prison twice for violating his parole. He was denied parole a number of times because the board determined he was a danger to society and had a willingness to target women.
He was finally released in March of 2004. Rick Dietz's last local address was in the town of Perry, in Wyoming County.

Dietz is now in the Monroe County Jail, with bail is set at $75,000.

He will appear in Pittsford Town Court on October 27.

Nazareth says its security system worked in this case and the college is continuing to warn students to lock dorm doors and not let anyone in whom they don't know.

Harold Porter - Repeat Sex Offender - Victim saved with help from bystander

Police now say a Swanton man charged with attempting kidnapping also tried to abduct another woman in 2001.

Harold Porter, 45, of Swanton, was arraigned Tuesday on multiple charges. His lengthy criminal record includes sex crimes as well as an attempted kidnapping charge in 2001 after he tried unsuccessfully to nab a woman off the streets of Swanton in broad daylight.
Police arrested Porter this time after they say he tried to drag a woman into his pickup on Colchester Avenue in Burlington. A resident helped save the woman. Police say they caught up with Porter thanks to a tip from a car dealer who recognized the description of his truck on the news. There are only a handful of those style trucks in Vermont and the dealer had sold two of them to Porter.
Burlington Police Det. Art Cyr said, "We don't know his intentions. We don't know how he picked her or what it was about her that made him decide this was the person he was going to grab."

Porter was not on the Vt. Sex Offender Registry website because he was still under department of corrections supervision for the 2001 charge.

James Leslie Alsman - Repeat Sex Offender - Scumbag Judge says victim too young to testify against his confessed abuser

The trial of a convicted child molester, James Leslie Alsman, also known as Jimmy Alsman, was scheduled to start on Thursday but it didn't.

The case was dismissed.

Alsman had been charged, again, with child molesting.

The Greene County Prosecutor's Office filed the motion to dismiss after the court ruled the victim in the current case, a male child who was only 4-years-old, did not understand the nature and obligation of an oath and should not testify.
The prosecution had a confession. Alsman had been given a polygraph test and failed. But without the victim's testimony, the prosecution said they did not have enough evidence to convict.
Following the dismissal, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Cheryl Jackson-Stone expressed disappointment.

"We were very frustrated about this. But we can't change the evidence that we have and we can't change the laws of the state," said Stone.
Under Indiana law, Stone explained, a confession is not enough for a conviction. There must be other evidence.
"This case was dismissed because the state has to present evidence, independent of a confession, that establishes that a crime has occurred," said Stone. "We did not have that in this case."

Alsman is a sex offender whose criminal history includes a class C felony conviction on Oct. 17, 2003, in Greene County for child molesting.

Following the 2003 conviction, Alsman was sentenced to the Department of Corrections, served his time then was released on Nov. 18, 2005.

Alsman is listed on the Indiana Sex and Violent Offender's Registry. He's required to register through Nov. 18, 2015.

The Registry lists a P.O. box and a street address of 107 E. Main St. in Sandborn as his residence and says that he is 31-years-old.

Late last spring, Alsman was again accused of molesting a child in Linton.

A warrant for Alsman's arrest was issued and he was taken into custody on May 27 by Indiana State Police Trooper Byron Goodman.

A class C felony charge of child molesting was filed following an investigation by the Linton Police Department led by Det. Duane Collenbaugh.

Alsman was released from jail on $10,000 bond while the case made its way through the court system.

The nature of the complaint was that Alsman allegedly had touched the small male child in an inappropriate manner.
According to a probable cause affidavit, when Alsman was given a polygraph test, the most relevant questions asked concerned whether Alsman had ever touched the child's penis for sexual gratification -- he failed the test.
The affidavit also stated that when the child was interviewed by a detective and a CPS worker, he could identify his body parts and the members of his family and could confirm that Alsman had touched him and knew where it had happened -- at a residence in Linton where Alsman was living at the time.
According to an earlier story in the archives of the Greene County Daily World, Alsman was 25-years-old and a resident of Marco when he was arrested in 2003 for child molesting. In that case, he was accused of touching a 5-year-old boy at a residence in Bloomfield.
In yet another case, Alsman was also arrested on March 17 of this year by LPD Officer Jayson Smith after an altercation at a residence in Linton. As a result, charges of intimidation, battery and battery resulting in bodily injury were filed against him in Greene Superior Court.

According to a police report on the incident, a male family member said Alsman was holding down his grandchild and he told Alsman to stop. An argument then started as Alsman became angry and started yelling and cussing. Alsman was accused of pushing the man in the chest knocking him over a table and onto the floor where he hit his head. Then as the argument continued, Alsman allegedly grabbed the man's wife by the arms and threw her to the ground.
