James Robert Mullaney - Library Pervert

An Internet user at the Royal Oak Public Library called police after he founds images of child pornography left open on a computer by the previous person.

Police said the suspect, James Robert Mullaney, 38, of Royal Oak, was still at the library when they answered the complaint about suspicious activity. Mullaney was arrested without incident and arraigned Thursday on five counts each of possession of child sexually abusive materials and using a computer to commit the crime.

A not guilty plea was entered for Mullaney by 44th District Court Judge Daniel Sawicki. The judge also set his bond at $100,000 cash surety. Mullaney couldn't post bond and is being held in the Oakland County Jail while he awaits a preliminary examination set for Friday.

Lt. Corrigan O'Donohue said police confiscated the computer for analysis and additional charges could be brought against Mullaney.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 5 when Mullaney reportedly left a computer terminal and someone else sat down at it.

"The person noticed several minimized windows," O'Donohue said. "They clicked on them and images showed up of a young female having sex with an adult male."

The person called police and pointed out the suspect. The computer was turned over to the Michigan State Police crime lab for forensic analysis.

Possession of child sexually abusive material is a five-year felony and using a computer to obtain it is a seven-year felony.
