An Augusta man already on the state's sex offender Web site was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Kennebec County on charges of possession of sexually explicit materials.
Melvin A. Woodburn, 51, is accused of possessing materials showing a child under 12 engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Deputy District Attorney Alan Kelley said the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Task Force seized a computer belonging to Woodburn on July 30, 2007, at the same time they seized one belonging to Woodburn's twin brother, Calvin Woodburn. The two shared a home in Augusta.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it is an indication that sufficient evidence is present to proceed with formal charges and a trial in superior court.
Melvin Woodburn is listed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry as a result of convictions in 1989 in California involving sexual contact with a child under age 14.
Calvin Woodburn was indicted in August 2007 on a charge of possession of sexually explicit materials of a minor under 12 and sentenced in November 2007 to five years in prison, with all but 14 months suspended and four years' probation.
He is currently at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.
He, too, is on the state sex offender registry as a result of convictions for gross sexual conduct and unlawful sexual conduct in Wiscasset in 1988.
In a separate case, John A. Estabrook, 38, of Monmouth was indicted on two counts each of gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.
The allegations involve the same victim, a girl who was 14 during much of the time, Kelley said.
According to the indictment, the incidents occurred between Dec. 17, 2005 and Oct. 30, 2007.
