Ruben Navejas - Library employee arrested for possession of child pornography

An employee at the Pharr Memorial Library was arrested Monday afternoon on a charge of possessing child pornography.

Ruben Navejas, a city employee who does maintenance work at the library, was arrested by Pharr police about 1:30 p.m.

Police took Navejas from the library for questioning and subsequently arrested him, said library Director Adolfo Garcia.

Navejas is about 44 years old, Garcia said.

Police spokesman Lt. Guadalupe Salinas said Navejas is not accused of accessing child pornography from library computers.

Garcia said he was surprised by the arrest.

“He does his job really well,” he said. “He was a decent guy.”

Navejas had not been fired from his job as of Monday evening, said the city Parks & Recreation Director Francisco Marin.

Marin said Navejas has worked at the library for about four years, on assignment from the parks & recreation department.

“We’ve never had any problems with him,” said Marin, who called Navejas dependable and hard working. “He’s always been a good employee.”

Police are expected to provide more information about the crimes they are charging him with today, when he will likely be arraigned.
