Deputies arrested a registered sex offender yesterday on suspicion of trying to kidnap a 9-year-old boy near a baseball field.

Brian Keith Wallace, 42, was booked into jail on suspicion of annoying a child while having a prior conviction for sexual assault and kidnapping, sheriff's Sgt. Christopher May said.

The incident was reported at 12:53 p.m. at Cactus County Park near Ashwood Street, just south of the San Diego River. Several adults told deputies they watched a man grab a boy and try to drag him toward the river bottom. The adults said they then began yelling and the man released the boy unharmed, then turned and ran toward the river.

Minutes later, May said, deputies arrested a man in the river bottom who matched witnesses' description of the assailant.
