A Salem man was arraigned Thursday on charges of sexually assaulting a girl at his home last year.
George Quintero, 43, was charged with sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl at his Wheeler avenue house. Police said Quintero is a convicted sex offender, and he knew the girl.
Salem police said they became aware of the case when Massachusetts authorities said they were investigating similar allegations made in the Bay State.
"We were notified and contacted by the Medford, Mass., police department, who were conducting a parallel investigation for the same type of issue," Capt. Shawn Patten said. "Through that investigation, it was determined that some of the crimes were committed in Salem."
Police said that while the Massachusetts allegations were being investigated, the girl, now 9, told authorities that Quintero had sexual contact with her in February 2007.
Quintero was charged in New Hampshire with one count of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of felonious sexual assault. He has not been charged in Massachusetts.
According to court records, Quintero was convicted by the U.S. military of murder and rape in Germany and served 17 years of a 27-year sentence. Police said the victim in that case was an adult.
"This person landed on the sex offender register due to a crime he was convicted of in 1985 with regards to a homicide and forcible rape," Patten said.
Although Quintero was a registered sex offender, because his victim was an adult, he was not included on a public registry.
Quintero was ordered held on $250,000 bail.
