Christopher Cates - Repeat Sex Offender - Compulsive Sexual Predator

A convicted sex offender from Oakland faces new charges after he was accused of exposing his genitals to female corrections staff, police said Thursday.

Franklin County Sheriff's Detective David St. Laurent said he issued a summons to Christopher Cates, 33, on a misdemeanor charge of indecent conduct this week at the Franklin County jail.

St. Laurent said he was alerted that Cates had exposed himself to a staff member and while he was investigating, another female staff member came forward and said Cates had exposed himself to her this spring.

In the latter matter, the staff member had reported the incident to a supervisor but police were not alerted, St. Laurent said.

Cates has been held at the jail on sex charges since March after he was charged with felony unlawful sexual contact, misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact and misdemeanor of unlawful sexual touching.

A probation hold was also put on him at the time by Kennebec County because one of Cates' probation conditions is no contact with females under age 18. He was previously convicted of unlawful sexual contact and was on probation when he was picked up for the March charges.

In that case, a Chesterville woman became suspicious of Cates after he came to her house after he was introduced by a friend, and offered to give two teenagers under 18 massages in another room. The woman had a massage by him.

The woman told police Cates inappropriately touched her and the two girls on their genitals, buttocks and breasts during massages.

After Cates left, the woman checked the Maine Sex Offender Registry and discovered Cates was on it and called police.

Cates has been held on $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety since his March court appearance.
