Jon Solnicka - Repeat Sex Offender - Faces 100 years

A Youngtown man previously convicted of raping a 10-year-old girl in Oregon now faces up to 100 years in prison for molesting three Arizona children.

Jon Solnicka, 40, was found guilty earlier this month on three counts of child molestation, said Mike Scerbo, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. He will be sentenced on Oct. 31.

In June 2007, police reported that Solnicka molested three children, ages 9, 11 and 12, at his home's pool, in the 11200 block of West Missouri Avenue. According to the report, some of the children stated that the suspect had had sexual contact with them.

After police spoke to the children's parents, who reported the incident, police tried to locate Solnicka at his home. When officers were unable to find him, they conducted surveillance on a possible hiding place: his mother's home in Sun City, the report stated.

Two days later, officers spotted Solnicka at the home and arrested him in the attic.

During interviews, he admitted to police he did swim with the three victims at his pool and that "he may have touched the victims, but it was an accident . . . " He also told police the children changed their clothes at his shed.

"The pool was like a kid magnet," said Sgt. Dave Evans, the arresting officer in the case. He said Solnicka's pool area was full of toys and other items used to lure children.

As investigators dug deeper, they unearthed another fact: He had an outstanding felony warrant out of Douglas County, Oregon, related to a child-rape conviction in 1989.

He had been sentenced to 20 years in jail, but Evans said Solnicka served only five years for the rape of a small girl. Once he was on parole, he fled to Arizona, where he took up residence in Youngtown.

Police said Solnicka was self-employed and lived in Youngtown with his wife and two children. He did not register as a sex offender when he moved to the state.
