Charles L. Byars Jr - Repeat Sex Offender - Gets off easy

A Streator sex offender added another sex offense to his record Friday in La Salle County Circuit Court.

Charles L. Byars Jr. pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual abuse. As part of Byars' agreement with Prosecutor Greg Sticka, Circuit Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. sentenced him to four years in prison. With credit for 88 days spent in county custody and good behavior, the 38-year-old Byars could be released in a little more than one year. The law permitted both a shorter and longer possible sentence.

Also as part of Byars' agreement, a charge of possessing child pornography was dropped. Byars was represented by Public Defender Tim Cappellini.

As for the sexual abuse offense, Byars admitted to involvement in an incident July 13 with a 16-year-old boy.

Byars was convicted in 1996 in Kane County of sexual assault and aggravated sexual abuse involving a 7-year-old victim.
