James Earl Melvin Jr. - Repeat Sex Offender - Child Molester

A 31-year-old registered sex offender was charged Tuesday with molesting an 11-year-old girl in Carpentersville last month.

James Earl Melvin Jr., of the 1200 block of South Court Street, Rockford, is facing two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of predatory criminal sexual assault, according to a court report.

The arrest stems from an investigation that began when Carpentersville police were called to the Fox View Apartments Feb. 27 and met with Melvin's accuser.

The girl identified as the offender Melvin, a convicted sex offender who served prison time for two prior convictions for predatory criminal sexual assault involving a girl under 13 years of age, according to court records.

Melvin told his probation officer in Rockford Monday that he violated his registration by molesting the girl, court documents state.

He was arrested Monday in the 200 block of Church Street in Rockford and brought back to Carpentersville.

Melvin remains in custody at the Kane County jail, unable to post 10 percent of a $1 million bond. His next scheduled court date is March 13 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
