Hector Gerardo Santos, 38, has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman, based on his DNA sample, which was obtained last month for the national sex offender registry after he was convicted of sexual interference with a child. The sexual assault dates back to April 28, 2005, when a then-46-year-old woman had been walking on 36 St., near Radcliffe Dr. S.E. about 2:30 a.m., when she was grabbed from behind and overpowered by a man.
The culprit took his victim to a secluded area and physically and sexually assaulted her.
He then walked the victim to another location in the area and sexually assaulted her a second time.
The culprit then fled.
Santos has also been charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement in connection with the attack, Sgt. Guy Baker said yesterday.
"It's a huge relief for all of us that somebody's caught for doing such a heinous crime," said Baker.
Santos, a crack addict, was convicted of sexual interference with a child in April and placed on two years probation, after taking into account the time he had already served in pre-trial custody at the Remand Centre.Santos approached a five-year-old girl playing in the Ogden area, pulled down her underwear and may have photographed her genitals before he was chased away.
Last year, he was handed a 12-month probation order after being convicted of assault in a December 2007, incident.Sex crimes Det. Jeff MacQueen yesterday said police are urging other possible victims of Santos to come forward in an effort to keep him behind bars.
"It is frustrating that a person like Mr. Santos, who continually re-offends, poses a constant danger in the community, and that's why we're continuing to investigate him for other sexual offences that may have occurred," said MacQueen.
"25% of all sex offenders re-offend within 15 years"
