What Ronald Paul Cyr, 62, didn’t know was that the girl he thought he was soliciting over the Internet was really Brattleboro Police Detective Erik Johnson, acting undercover as a member of the Vermont Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Johnson said that he had been chatting with Cyr, who went by the screen names "free_spirit_in_vt" and "onehnyguy2000," since February 2008.Over the months, Cyr allegedly made numerous sexual advances to what he thought was a female minor in "graphic detail."
Cyr also exposed himself to the undercover officer via Webcam.
Prior to his arrest, Cyr spoke to another undercover officer via cell phone to discuss the details of when and where they would meet and what sexual acts they were going to engage in when they got together.
When he allegedly arrived in Brattleboro with condoms in his pocket, Cyr thought he was going around to the back of a building to the residence of the minor.
Instead he was confronted by two detectives from the Brattleboro Police Department and one undercover officer from the Windham County Sheriff’s Department.
The Barre Police Department had also been assisting the Brattleboro Police and the task force in confirming the identify of the subject before he traveled from Barre to Brattleboro.
This is not the first time Cyr has been charged with a sexual crime. In 1989 he was charged with sexual assault and was convicted in 1990. He admitted to Johnson that sexual contact with a minor resulted in that conviction.Cyr was held at Southern State Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 bail.
He will appear in Windham District Court Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. to answer to the charges of luring a child and lewd and lascivious conduct.
Anyone who has been inappropriately contacted by the screen names Cyr used is asked to contact Detective Erik Johnson at 802-257-7950.
