Arthur Nelson Ream - Convicted child molester arrested in 1986 slaying of Eastpointe teen

Ream is currently serving a prison sentence for a third-degree criminal sexual assault against a 14-year-old girl in August of 1998. He was convicted of the 15-year felony in February of 1998 according to prison records.

Ream also served five years in prison from 1975 to 1980 on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a child.

A 58-year-old convicted child molester was charged today with murdering a 13-year-old Eastpointe girl who went missing more than two decades ago after a visit to an ice cream shop.

Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith charged Arthur Nelson Ream, formerly of Eastpointe, with first-degree murder in the slaying of Cindy Jocelyn Zarzycki.

Smith and Eastpointe Police Chief Michael Lauretti announced the news at a 2 p.m. conference today.

Cindy disappeared on April 20, 1986 after getting a vanilla ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen at Nine Mile and Rausch.

Smith said that Ream had set up a 9:30 a.m. meeting with Cindy at the Dairy Queen that day in order to take her to his son Scott's surprise birthday party.

"But there was no surprise party," Smith said.

Investigators have been constantly interviewing Ream over the years, mostly recently in January and May of 2007. Smith said that statements Ream made, along with the fact that he is a convicted child molester, kept the investigation on him.

Police and prosecutors say Ream killed the girl after she rejected sexual advances. Her body has not been found.

"Hopefully we'll get some closure for the family," Smith said. "This has been going on for far too long."

Family members who attended the conference were relieved prosecutors and police have not given up on the case.

"Sometimes you start to feel lost and forgotten, but I've never given up hope," said Ed Zarzycki, Cindy's father.

Ream is scheduled to be arraigned next Wednesday at 38th District Court in Eastpointe.
