A Reidsville man who is a registered sex offender was arrested and charged Monday afternoon with assaulting a 5-year-old girl.
According to Rockingham County Sheriff's Department spokesman Dean Venable, a relative of Richard Leroy Bruce, 44, found Bruce and the child engaged in an "act of sexual wrongdoing."
The relative notified the victim's family, who then called deputies.
Bruce was being held in the Rockingham County Jail on a $1 million bond.
He has been charged with first-degree statutory sex offense.
Bruce was convicted in 1992 of second-degree sex offense, but wasn't under GPS surveillance, Venable said.
According to state offender records, Bruce was also convicted of misdemeanor assault in 2007.
