Wayne Jay Bergeson - Repeat Sex Offender - 10 Computers full of Child Porn

A man who was highlighted during the push by the Utah Attorney General's Office to get funding for the prosecution of sex predators of children was convicted Wednesday on 10 counts of sex exploitation of a minor, all second-degree felonies.

Wayne Jay Bergeson, 54, is scheduled to be back in 3rd District Court Thursday to face another jury trial on five counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, also all second-degree felonies.

In January 2007, members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force used a battering ram to knock down the door of Bergeson's Sandy house. Inside, they found 10 computers with child porn, numerous CDs labeled and listed by "fetish," several toys still in their boxes and five firearms.

In 1979, Bergeson was charged with kidnapping, rape and sodomy. He was eventually convicted on the kidnaping charge.

During the 2007 legislative session, members of the ICAC team used the Bergeson story as an example of why a proposed funding bill was important in the fight against child sex predators and child pornography. The committee that ICAC spoke to unanimously passed the bill.

Wednesday, before 3rd District Judge Judith Atherton, a jury found Bergeson guilty on all 10 child sex exploitation counts. Atherton ordered Adult Probation and Parole to prepare a presentence report and scheduled sentencing for Dec. 5.
