An Abilene man, already a registered sex offender, was arrested this morning on suspicion of sexually assaulting a girl younger than 14 years old.
Derrick Bernard Hardin, Jr., 21, is being held at the Taylor County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond. He has previously spent time in a Texas Youth Commission facility for another sexual assault. Details about that case were not immediately available.
The alleged assault occurred on Oct. 4. According to court documents, the girl reported to police that she tried to fight off her attacker, whom she later identified as Hardin in a photo lineup, but was overpowered.
Hardin went to the girl’s home after she reported it to police and “acted in a threatening manner,” court documents show.
Aggravated sexual assault of a child charge is a first-degree felony, punishable by up to life in prison.
