A state judge set a cash-only bail at $500,000 for convicted sex offender and longtime fugitive Michael Andrew Stephens.
Judge Derrick Chan set the bail during a hearing watched by Stephens via closed-circuit television. An unshaven Stephens, wearing an orange jumpsuit, was being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
Deputy prosecutor Rom Trader says the 56-year-old Stephens has virtually no chance of making bail.
Stephens was on the run for 15 years, but was captured two weeks ago in Mexico by U.S. Marshals. He was convicted in 1990 for sexually assaulting and kidnapping a 16-year-old boy. He was awaiting trial in 1993 on new charges when he fled.
Trader says more charges could be filed in the case, as well as a motion to revoke bail.
