Rene Carriere, 39, pleaded guilty to sexual interference, two counts of breaching bail conditions, one of failing to show up for court and one of breaching a probation order.
He was sentenced to the maximum reformatory term of two years less a day, in addition to the nearly six months he has been in jail awaiting trial.
Carriere’s lawyer and assistant Crown attorney Grace Kurke proposed the sentence. Defence lawyer Ted Conroy said the sentence would allow his client to serve the term at the Ontario Correctional Institute in Brampton, which treats sex offenders.
Kurke told the court that in a statement to authorities, the child described how, on two separate occasions in early 2005, Carriere had her undress and then fondled her genitals.
The incidents came to light in the early summer of 2006 while the young girl was at camp.
In a victim impact statement filed with the court, the young girl said she has trouble sleeping and concentrating, and now finds it hard to trust adults, Kurke said.
“These are offences of extreme seriousness, especially given the previous conviction,” said Superior Court Justice John Pourpore.
Carriere was arrested in Edmonton in October and transported back to Sudbury, where he’s been in jail since.
In addition to the jail term, Carriere’s name will be added to the national registry of convicted sex offenders. He was also ordered to provide a sample of his DNA for the national DNA databank.
He will also be on probation for 18 months when he is released from custody. During that time, he is prohibited from being around children under the age of 16 unless accompanied by an adult.
