A man who's a registered sex offender will spend 20 years in state prison for beating to death a 66-year-old gay man and leaving the victim's body in an apartment for several days.
Forty-seven-year-old Dean Bissell previously pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the death of Walter Bak last March in Bissell's apartment in Utica.
Bissell said he became angry at Bak because Bak — who was openly gay — had begun to make sexual advances on him while they were in Bissell's apartment.
Bissell left the body in his apartment for several days before it was discovered by police.
Bak worked as a local freelance editor.
Bissell already was a Level 3 sex offender. He was sentenced Thursday as a second violent felony offender.
