Paul Gerard Johnson Jr - Repeat Sex Offender - Charged with kidnapping and assault

State police charged a 40-year-old Bel Air man, who is a registered sex offender, with kidnapping and assault in the abduction of an Abingdon woman late Sunday.

Paul Gerard Johnson Jr. of the 1000 block of Wingate Court was taken into custody Monday after Aberdeen police pursued him through the city. He is being held at the Harford County Detention Center and also faces charges of false imprisonment and carrying a concealed weapon. A bail review hearing is scheduled Tuesday.

Shortly before midnight Sunday, state troopers from the Bel Air barracks responded to a report of an assault at a convenience store on Route 7 in Abingdon. They found a 39-year-old woman bruised and bleeding. The woman said she had been a passenger in a car driven by Johnson. He refused to let her out of the vehicle and threatened her with a large knife, police said. When she tried to escape, Johnson grabbed her clothing and dragged her alongside the vehicle for a short distance, until she fell, according to police.

Early Monday, officers from the Aberdeen Police Department saw Johnson's vehicle in the area of Route 22 and Interstate 95. He refused to stop and a short pursuit ensued. The chase ended when Johnson crashed on Route 22 in Churchville, police said.
